After discovering that Luke has befriended the scary next door neighbor, Mr. Kleezak, Claire looks for reassurance from Phil that it's all right for little kids to be friends with old people. Phil agrees that it's all right, naming several movies, 'Up', 'Gran Torino', and 'True Grit', to back up his opinion. Claire points out that all of those movies are terrible examples.

Lenny and Carl float above Springfield in a lawn chair attached to balloons in order to patrol the area against Ogdenvillers. While they are floating, the house from 'Up' pasing by them in the distance.

Sue asks for a surprise party for her Leap Day birthday. Frankie tells her it won't be a surprise if she is asking for a surprise. Sue reminds her that every time she watches Up, she is surprised when the house floats away.

The 'Itchy and Scratchy Show' at the beginning of this episode, is a parody of the movie 'Up'.

Murray wants to leave the nursing home, so Rallo tells him he saw something in a movie that might work. Rallo is referring to the film 'Up', and ties a bunch of balloons to Murray's wheelchair, to help him take off. Only Rallo's plan doesn't work out quite as well as it did in the movie. After Rallo shoots Murray back down with his BB gun, out the window, the character from 'Up' is floating away in his house, tied to balloons, shouting "hey Murray! Up...yours!".
