The students at South Park Elementary are assigned to read J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, and are excited to do so after learning about the controversy surrounding the book. However, Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny do not find the novel offensive at all and believe they were tricked into reading a boring book by believing the hype behind its notoriety. The four write their own novel entitled The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs, with the intention of making it the most profane and controversial book ever. Fearing punishment after it turns up missing, they convince Butters that he wrote it, making Butters popular. The other boys, dismayed at Butters's success with their book, mount a campaign to get it banned.
