Cryptonomicon is a 1999 novel by American author Neal Stephenson. The novel follows the exploits of two groups of people in two different time periods, presented in alternating chapters. Fiona and Jimmy try to get the kids back after they are taken away by child protective services, even going so far as to attempt to track Monica down and to ask Veronica and Kev to apply to foster them. She ultimately gets Frank to agree to clean up and petition for their return. Fiona quits her job at the grocery store when the manager won't let her off to go find the kids. Frank gets Sheila to pose as Monica since the petition for custody requires signatures from both parents. Frank and Sheila must attend a parenting class in order to get the kids back; Sheila hopes that the class might help her understand why Karen ran away. Meanwhile Veronica and Kev continue their quest to have a baby. Veronica convinces Kev to have sex with her mother, as the artificial insemination was not working. Mickey's dad finds Ian and Mickey in a sexual position; he beats them both and then calls a prostitute to have sex with Mickey, forcing Ian to watch. At the end of the episode, Fiona finds out that Frank was the one who called child protective services.

Jan, Michael, Dwight, Jim, and Karen attend a cocktail party hosted by Dunder-Mifflin's CFO David Wallace. Jan and Michael choose to make their relationship public at this event. With the branch managers away, the remainder of the office goes to happy hour at Poor Richard's. While there, Creed is greeted warmly by a group of teenagers to whom he sold fake IDs. Pam reminds Roy that, as her boyfriend, he needs to attend as well. Roy brings his brother, who "took a bath" selling their jet skis. At the party, Karen plays a joke on Jim by identifying many people at the party as former boyfriends, Dwight takes it upon himself to give the house a thorough inspection, and Michael's public displays of affection make Jan uncomfortable. Towards the end of the evening, the CFO invites Jim to shoot hoops (play basketball) in the backyard where they witness Dwight kicking the chimney. As Michael and Jan drive home together, they have an awkward argument regarding their future together. As they argue, Dwight pops up in the backseat and tells them, "Don't break up, you guys." At Poor Richard's, Pam tells Roy she wants a fresh start in their relationship and tells him about the "Casino Night" kiss. Roy reacts violently, and, along with his brother, begins destroying the bar. Pam calls off their relationship. After Roy's brother uses the jet ski money to pay off the bar for damages, Roy angrily mutters, "I am gonna kill Jim Halpert."

In the episode Ryan is taken by Dwight on what he believes is a sales call, but instead is brought to Dwight's beet farm for an "initiation". Pam is supposed to keep track of Michael's productivity, but Michael spends his day waiting in line for a pretzel. Jim steals Karen's chair and foils her attempts to get it back.

In a behind the scenes look at the show, the cast members start to tell about their daily work lives, but soon everything still comes back to Peter being difficult. Unaware that he is being fired until a table read reveals that he is bing killed off and replaced by David Spade as "Uncle Ricky," Peter takes his case to the producers who give him a second chance, only to have him be an ass once again and is kicked off the show for good.

Liz becomes angry when no one seems to remember her 40th birthday on show night; Tracy decides to break character all night; Jack struggles with the consequences of his promises to not drinking during Avery's pregnancy.

Pam interviews for a job in Philadelphia, but her potential manager gives her deja vu. Dwight acquires the help of Angela in order to clean his elderly Aunt Shirley.

When Donna isn't thrilled by marred life, Cleveland reveals that he and Donna haven't yet taken their honeymoon. When soliciting ideas from the gang, Coach McFall reveals his former fling with Tyne Daly in New York City. Inspired, Cleveland takes Donna on a road trip to the Big Apple, and to Donna's dismay, Cleveland allows the Stoolbend gang to tag along while the kids are left with Terry. The next morning, Donna and Cleveland try to enjoy their time while the rest of the gang wander off but they soon get into trouble, requiring Cleveland come to the rescue and break off his day with Donna. Cleveland tries to make it up by taking Donna to a Broadway show but its a cover for helping Coach McFall reunite with Tyne Daly. When Coach McFall actually meets Tyne Daly, they find his breakup wasn't exactly under pleasant circumstances. Frustrated with being neglected by Cleveland, she leaves and returns to the hotel bar.

After enrolling in a rehabilitation center, Hank adjusts well his time there and meets a fellow patient named Faith. Charlie who poses as a homosexual agent signs a award-winning gay actor as a client. Marcy deals with the return of Stu while Karen gets a job as a house keeper unknowingly to her of rock musician Atticus Fetch.

After a stressful day at the school, Donna comes home and is in no mood for Cleveland's shenanigans. At The Broken Stool, the guys tease Cleveland about Donna running things. When he confronts Donna, She admits she had to develop a take-charge attitude to survive being a single mom but agrees to lighten up a little for Cleveland. Cleveland and Donna are robbed at an ATM with the their taking their money and Donna's wedding right. While Donna struggles with the thief to protect her ring, Cleveland runs around helplessly. When the thief's gun goes off and Cleveland is shot, Donna feels horrible and agrees to restrain herself more for Cleveland.

When Max's high school girlfriend Angie (Riki Lindhome), the girl he dated before he realized he was gay, moves back to town, Penny starts feeling jealous, but then she tries to befriend her and Alex develops an unusual crush on Max. Meanwhile, Dave starts dating Angie, so Max declares a "code war" and Jane finds out Brad has a "work wife" so she sets her sights on Steven (Hayes MacArthur), the head of human resources at her workplace, with the intent of making him her "work husband".

The Scranton and Stamford branches prepare for the upcoming merger. Pam professes excitement over the merger, including the return of Jim (throughout the episode they interact in a friendly but awkward manner). Andy proclaims he'll be the No. 2 man in Scranton in six weeks time through "name repetition, personality mirroring and never breaking off a handshake." A rivalry between Dwight and Andy begins over the number two position in the office. At the welcoming party, Michael plays a videotape he has created called "Lazy Scranton", which features him and Dwight rhyming over the music of Saturday Night Live's "Lazy Sunday". Phyllis helps Karen investigate the source of a terrible smell, and they realize that Karen smelled Phyllis' perfume. Phyllis states that it was a present from Bob Vance, and is offended when his name means nothing to Karen, and says "You have a lot to learn about this town, sweetie". Karen later makes amends (thanks to Jim's assistance) by asking Phyllis if Bob Vance owns Vance Refrigeration. Michael embarrasses hefty new employee Tony by attempting to push him onto a table with the rest of the new employees; this causes Tony to quit. However, an angered Michael fires him instead, unintentionally entitling him to severance pay. Michael learns that Jim is the number two in the office, which prompts Andy and Dwight to argue over who is number three. After a plan to unite the employees goes awry, they find that they have a common interest: their contempt of Michael. Jim tells Pam that he is seeing someone. Dwight and Andy trade barbs on the way to the office the next day.
