Set in Rodanthe, North Carolina, the story follows the romance of a divorced mother, Adrienne Willis, and a divorced father and surgeon, Paul Flanner. The novel's two main protagonists meet in an inn in Rodanthe and fall in love; however, fate falls upon them when they realize that leaving Rodanthe would mean going back to their separate lives.

The story revolves around the summer of Ronnie Miller's seventeenth year, during which she is sent to stay with her estranged father. Through their shared love of music, the duo reconnect.
