The largely autobiographical story, which takes place in the 1930s, describes a period in the lives of the seven-year-old narrator and an elderly woman who is his distant cousin and best friend. The evocative narrative focuses on country life, friendship, and the joy of giving during the Christmas season, and it also gently yet poignantly touches on loneliness and loss.

Lord of the Flies is an allegorical novel by Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding. It discusses how culture created by man fails, using as an example a group of British schoolboys stuck on a deserted island who try to govern themselves, but with disastrous results.

Love Story is a 1970 romance novel by American writer Erich Segal. The book's origins were in that of a screenplay Segal wrote and was subsequently approved for production by Paramount Pictures. Portions of the story originally appeared in The Ladies' Home Journal. David Janssen stars as Richard Kimble, a doctor from the fictional town of Stafford, Indiana, who is falsely convicted of his wife's murder and given the death penalty. En route to death row, Kimble's train derails and crashes, allowing him to escape and begin a cross-country search for the real killer, a "one-armed man" (played by Bill Raisch). At the same time, Dr. Kimble is hounded by the authorities, most notably by Stafford Police Lieutenant Philip Gerard (Barry Morse).

Jenny nevertheless discovers her ailment after confronting her doctor about her recent illness. With their days together numbered, Jenny begins costly cancer therapy, and Oliver soon becomes unable to afford the multiplying hospital expenses. Desperate, he seeks financial relief from his father. Instead of telling his father what the money is truly for, Oliver misleads him.

Picnic is a 1955 Cinemascope film in Technicolor which tells the story of an ex-college football star turned drifter who arrives in a small Kansas town on Labor Day and is drawn to a girl who is already spoken for. The plot covers a 24-hour period.

While returning home from getting bubblegum ice cream, 23-year-old Jimmy Chance saves Lucy from her boyfriend, and has a one-night-stand with her. The next morning Jimmy and his parents, Virginia and Burt discover from a news report that Jimmy's one night stand is actually a serial killer who murdered her boyfriends, and in response Virginia knocks her out with a television. Eight months later, Jimmy finds out that she is pregnant with his child, and after she is sentenced to death, Jimmy takes the baby and wants to raise her himself. Burt and Virginia initially try to convince Jimmy to give the baby up, but eventually they help out, renaming the baby from "Princess Beyonce" to Hope.
