'Light A Penny Candle' tells the story of two girls growing up in the aftermath of World War II.

The plot revolves around the rural town of Mountfern between the years of 1963 and 1966. Patrick O'Neill, an American businessman, returns to "the land of his ancestors" to build a resort out of a condemned castle. The town pub, run by the Ryan family, is threatened with closure at the prospect of the elaborate resort, and both the O'Neill and Ryan families are negatively impacted by the events which unfold in the novel.

The novel is centered around the lives of eight people, each of which have etched their dreams or desires into a large beech tree on the last day of school. The novel follows the progression of their lives and whether or not they accomplish their dreams.

Set in a rural Irish village in the 1950s, as well as London, The Glass Lake focuses on Kit McMahon and her relationship with her mother with the story spanning about a decade.

Dexter must deal with Rita's menacing husband. Debra goes on a date with the prosthetics expert who made prosthetic legs for an Ice Truck Killer survivor. Debra and Angel are investigating the Ice Truck Killer and discover a familiar name with speeding violations near the scene of the Ice Truck Killer's third murder. Dexter is investigating Sergeant Doakes's knife victim; he already knows the killer's identity but needs time to locate him. The Ice Truck Killer is finally apprehended, but Dexter doubts that they have caught the correct man.
