Chris gets elected homecoming king, but Meg discovers that the cool kids only voted for him in order to prank him. Meanwhile, Peter and the gang get jealous when Cleveland starts hanging out with Jerome, so they look for a new black friend.

Piper starts a prison newsletter with the help of Healy and a few other inmates; Vee launches an entrepreneurial enterprise.

Frank stops drinking (for $3000), which pleases Carl and Debbie, but Lip doesn't believe Frank is capable of two sober weeks. Ian continues his relationship with Mickey. Fiona scrambles to find a better paying job, while Steve's past starts catching up with him. Lip tours the University of Chicago campus and is offered an interesting opportunity. Veronica and Kev's foster daughter is a little different than expected, having come from a Mormon polygamous sect.

Jay and the family plan to celebrate New Year's together at a hotel in Palm Springs, but the hotel doesn't meet their expectations; Alex and Haley are faced with challenges as they try to watch the kids back at home.

Kristina and Adam don't agree about whether they should allow Max run for class president. Despite Adam's reservations, Kristina encourages Max even though she might not have the time to help him. Meanwhile, Crosby and Jasmine need to sit with their son and have "the talk" after Jabbar hears the "n" word. Sarah grows closer to her new boss while entertaining his daughter and Zeek finds a potential new friend in someone younger. Victor joins in an after school activity giving Julia and Joel a glimpse of what their future family could be.

In the ruins of what was once North America, the nation Panem randomly chooses one boy and girl, ages 12-18, from the 12 districts to risk their lives in the Hunger Games, a ruthless competition in which each contestant, or tribute, attempts to kill the others until only one remains. The winner receives honor, gifts, and enough food and supplies to never worry for anything material again. The Games, while entertainment for the Capitol's citizens, are a yearly reminder to the 12 districts of their unsuccessful rebellion 74 years ago. As a sign of the Capitol's strength and power, each of the districts must sacrifice two tributes each year.
