Fry wins a contest that allows him and the Planet Express crew to tour the factory where his favorite soft drink, Slurm, is made. During the tour, Fry, Leela, and Bender stumble into the factory's underbelly where they discover that the drink is actually the secretion of a giant worm, the Slurm Queen, as part of a money-making plot. The Queen discovers the three and, fearing her company will be ruined if the scandal is exposed, attempts to silence them, but they escape. However, Fry cannot bring himself to ruin his favorite drink, so the Planet Express crew decides to keep the plot a secret.

In the episode, Michael excitedly starts a Willy Wonka-inspired promotional gimmick providing discounts to customers who receive golden tickets, then tries to blame the idea on Dwight when the promotion appears to cost the company a large amount of money. In a B story, Kevin receives conflicting romantic advice from Andy, Jim and Pam.

A new student named Allison Taylor arrives at Springfield Elementary School and proves to be more than a match for Lisa in both educational and musical feats. After Allison wins first chair saxophone in the school orchestra ahead of her, Lisa vows to defeat Allison at something: by winning the school diorama contest. Meanwhile, Homer steals 100 pounds of sugar from an overturned truck and decides to sell it to the town. However, despite his best efforts to guard his sugar mound, a rainstorm dissolves it. At the contest, Bart switches Allison's diorama of The Tell-Tale Heart with a cow's heart to help Lisa win. Lisa's guilt at the plan forces her to give Allison's real model back. The pair set aside their differences and become friends. Principal Skinner decides that neither Allison nor Lisa's entry deserves to win, awarding victory to Ralph Wiggum.

On a trip to college for an interview, Peter teaches Meg a thing or two about partying. Meanwhile, a stinky encounter with a skunk gets Brian kicked out of the house and into the wild, where he learns to live on his own.

The Simpsons rescue a diving horse named Duncan from abuse and keep it as a pet (despite The Comic Book Guy's protest that the Simpsons have done this before), but when the cost of upkeeping the horse rises, Homer and Bart train Duncan to be a racing horse. Meanwhile, Lisa is upset over her school losing the band competition to Ogdenville unfairly at the state fair and writes a letter to Bill Clinton in protest.

Barney invites his gay, black brother James to "liven" up the gang's life as all of them have been 'coupled' off and Barney is alone. James lives the same lifestyle as Barney. To his dismay, Barney discovers that James is engaged to a man named Tom. He disapproves until he discovers that James and Tom have adopted a baby, making Barney an uncle.

Springfield is officially declared the World's Fattest Town. Out of embarrassment and disgust, Marge goes on a crusade against the local sugar corporation. However, when sugar is banned, Homer, Bart, Mr. Burns and Apu start bootlegging sugar.

During a pajama party to watch Robin's early morning talk show, Lily recounts her efforts to sabotage most of Ted's relationships after Ted's girlfriend, Karen, finds a woman's earring in his bed. Barney learns the pleasures of nightshirts, and after Karen and Ted break up, Ted and Robin promise to be each others' "back-up spouse".

During a field trip, Lisa discovers desert water that makes usually combative creatures get along; after getting kicked out of the retirement home, Grampa comes to live with the family.

Brenda's father dies and Nate attends the funeral to Lisa's chagrin; David and Keith attend a brunch; Claire spends a lot of time with Russell.

Michael announces that the sales department will be pairing up. Andy chooses Michael, Phyllis chooses Karen, and Stanley grudgingly chooses Ryan, leaving Dwight with Jim. Andy learns that Dwight does Michael's laundry as punishment for meeting with Jan to take over the branch. During their sales call, Andy sabotages the meeting, setting up an opportunity to later apologize to Michael, stating that he had really "Schruted" the situation, a further attempt to deride Dwight. While the salespeople are out, Angela tells Pam a thinly disguised story of how "Kurt" saves "Noelle" ("Kurt" and "Noelle" being Dwight's and Angela's middle names, respectively) by taking important documents to New York. At first, Jim's and Dwight's sales call appears to be a fiasco, but it is immediately clear that the joint force of Jim's straight-and-honest sales approach, along with Dwight's aggressive, erratic tactics, is a very successful partnership. Ryan asks Stanley if he could lead on this call so Stanley can critique him, which Stanley obliges. However, Ryan freezes up and fails when he realizes that Stanley's clients are all black. Stanley laughs at an annoyed Ryan during the entire trip back to the office. Phyllis and Karen first stop at a beauty parlor, emerging with gaudy makeovers. Their sales call is a success owing to the fact, as Phyllis knew, that the client obviously likes women with that kind of look, as evidenced by the photo of his wife. Returning to the office, Phyllis tells Karen that she's pleased that Jim got over his crush on Pam. Karen confronts Jim with this information, and he reassures her that his crush has passed. Andy finds evidence of Dwight's trip to New York. Michael accuses Dwight of disloyalty, and Angela prevents him from clearing his name because it would expose their relationship. Dwight resigns. Andy gloats over his success, but the documentary camera catches Angela in the background glaring at him.

Lisa writes a new Springfield anthem after discovering the old one was plagiarized. Guest star: Pharrell Williams as himself.

While Matthew plans a stellar bachelor party for Richard, New Christine insists she was content with her office bachelorette which consisted of a coffee break at the downstairs shop. Barb convinces Christine that they should take New Christine to Vegas for a proper bachelorette where she tries tequila for the first time. Richard's brother comes in for his bachelor party and is totally insulted that Richard has asked Matthew to be his best man.
