The film is set in 1968, the day Richard Nixon was first elected to the White House, and was released soon after the Watergate scandal had reached its messy conclusion. The political atmosphere provides a source of dramatic irony, since the audience, but not the characters, are aware of the direction the Nixon presidency would eventually take. However, the main theme of the film is not presidential politics but sexual politics; it is renowned for its sharp satire of late-1960s sexual and social mores.

While on a hunting trip in Michigan with two Chevy executives, Ken Cosgrove is accidentally shot in the side of his face with buckshot. Back in New York, Ken confides to Pete Campbell that he can no longer deal with the personal stress that Chevy is causing him. Pete sees this as his opportunity to finally handle Chevy and suggests to Ken that he manage the account. The firm's partners agree to the arrangement, and have Bob Benson on the account, too. Pete learns from Duck Phillips that Bob lied about his background. Pete tells Bob of his discovery, but reveals nothing to the firm so that he can maintain control over Bob. Don takes a day off from work, and Harry Crane calls to tell Don that Sunkist wants to expand their print ad campaign to television. Don cites the conflict with Ocean Spray, but Harry insists to the point where Roger and Don inform Jim and Ted about the development. Don tries to make it up to Ted by backing him up during a pitch to St. Joseph Aspirin, but warns Ted that his affection toward Peggy has been clouding his judgement. Betty informs Don that she and Henry are considering sending Sally to boarding school for girls. Betty and Sally take an overnight trip to visit a school. The next day, while driving home, Betty informs Sally that the school's feedback about her was positive.

Roger tells Don of a potential new client, Sunkist. They inform Ted prior to their partners meeting and Ted loses his temper because he and Jim have been preparing a proposal to land Ocean Spray, which would present a conflict. Sally and her friend, Julie, are staying with Don and Megan in order to attend a Model U.N. meeting in Midtown. In the lobby they meet the Rosens' son, Mitchell. Megan learns that Mitchell has dropped out of college and has been classified as 1-A, making him eligible for the military draft. Don then discusses Mitchell's situation at a client dinner that evening with Chevy, and the next morning Ted informs Don of a connection he has in the Air National Guard that can help with Mitchell's situation, but only agrees to help if Don drops Sunkist. Don tries to contact Dr. Rosen and gets Sylvia instead, who is overjoyed that Don has intervened. Julie informs Sally that she wrote a love letter to Mitchell, signed Sally's name, then slipped it under door of the Rosen's apartment. Sally goes back to the building and receives keys for the hotel from the doorman. Sally goes to to the Rosen's apartment to retrieve the letter and sees Don and Sylvia having sex, and Sally runs out of the room. Later that night Don returns to his apartment, and Dr. Rosen and Mitchell drop in to thank Don. Sally storms off to her room. Sally locks the door and Don tries to explain that Sylvia was upset and he was only trying to comfort her, adding that the situation is "complicated." Don asks Sally if she understands and goes off to bed

Walter, Jesse and Mike meet with Declan, without the methylamine. Walter suggests that he cook for them, while they take a 35% cut and pay off the $5,000,000 to Mike. Jesse still wants to quit cooking meth after he has seen so much bloodshed and, after a dispute, Walter eventually lets him leave but is not willing to pay Jesse any of the "dirty money" he has earned. Meanwhile Hank has been told to end his pursuit of Mike, so instead he follows the lawyer, David, who is laundering Mike's money. David gives in to the DEA, but Walter finds out and warns Mike, who tells him to get the emergency getaway bag he left at the airport. When they meet, Walter demands that Mike tell him the names of the nine people in prison whose silence Mike has been paying for. Mike refuses to meet Walt's demand, so Walter shoots him using a gun he found in Mike's bag. Mike appears to escape, but Walt finds him. He then realizes aloud that he could have gotten the names from Lydia, and apologizes to Mike, who asks Walt to "let him die in peace". Within a few moments, Mike dies and falls to the ground.

In flashbacks, Kate tries to have an ordinary life and get married, but ends up running away after confessing to her husband about her past.

When a local art dealer is named a suspect in his wife's murder, the team re-investigates the 1968 death of a girl he was escorting to a debutante ball. The victim's mother sees her looking at the moon.

Lorelai forgets to keep some news off the record when she is interviewed by a magazine about the success of the Dragonfly Inn.

Said returns from the hole ready to apologize to White, and the two turn over a new leaf in their relationship. Robson's painful teeth force him to the dentist, something he secretly fears. The dentist recommends gum replacement surgery. Alvarez wants to give his dog to Eugene Rivera (the Oz guard he blinded). Cyril's trial looms and gets off to an inauspiciously cold start. Ryan is worried and cuts a deal that gets Shupe disabled. Redding continues to search for culprit that gave Hill the drugs. Poet, in an attempt to hide the truth from Redding convinces Busmalis to tell Redding that one of the Italians did the deed. This results in Redding having DeSantos poisoned. Chucky's condition worsens and out of fear, he summons Sister Peter for spiritual help. Dr. Nathan counsels Peter Schibetta. Sister Pete starts looking for Schibetta's attackers only the 3 who know (Said, Beecher, Schillinger) refuse to divulge. tensions between Mukada and Kirk come to a boil when Mukada convinces Hoyt to squeal. In exchange for a blow job, Timmy Kirk has Clarence get someone to burn down Father Mukada's church and rectory. He is seriously injured, and two other priests die. Beecher and Keller anger McClain, who walks out. Howell gives Keller a free trip to Benchley Memorial. Beecher takes Schillinger's deal: He takes the mail job and Adam is transferred to Unit B.

After several unsuccessful attempts at getting a girlfriend, Moe finally gets one after walking away from a disco with Homer. The woman, Renee, surprisingly finds Moe attractive, resulting in Moe treating her lavishly. After spending too much, Moe's credit card maxes out, causing him to become desperate for money. He soon devises a plan to have Homer steal his car and crash it to accomplish insurance fraud. Unfortunately, Homer gets caught and ends up in jail. With the insurance money, Moe decides not to bail Homer out of jail, but instead take a Hawaiian vacation with Renee. After finding out, Homer escapes and decides to find Moe for revenge. Meanwhile, Moe confesses the truth to Renee, who is happy at first, but is disgusted with him after his plans to free Homer involve lying again. Renee leaves Moe, then he accidentally starts a fire at his tavern. At the same time, Homer comes to fight Moe, but both faint due to the smoke. Finally, Barney comes and saves the two, and Homer allows Moe to temporarily run his bar at the Simpsons' house.
