A referee's deathbed confession leads the team to reopen a 1976 case in which an over-matched boxer died during a match that someone paid off to continue. The victim's girlfriend sees both him and her dead father. No one is arrested for this because it is proven that the victim unintentionally caused his own death.

In the episode, Marge revives her high school-era interest in painting by enrolling in an art class after getting encouraged by Lisa. When she wins first prize in a local art competition for a portrait of Homer on the couch in his underwear, Mr. Burns commissions her to paint a portrait of him. Meanwhile, Homer is determined to lose weight after becoming stuck in a water slide at an amusement park.

Walt drives to Gus's restaurant with an eager Hank to retrieve the tracking bug he left on Gus's car. Hank's suspicious when the bug only shows Gus driving between home and work: "He's so clean he must be dirty." Skyler is alarmed when Ted, whose company's cooked books Skyler signed off on, visits to tell her the IRS is auditing him. She pretends to be his ditzy, untrained accountant, putting off the investigation so long as he pays the fines and back taxes, which Ted tells her he doesn't have the money to do. Hank's research uncovers Gus's depot, so Jesse is brought in to help clean and move all the product out of it. While there, one of the cartel's top lieutenants, sniping, kills one of the workers, but Mike pulls a shock-stilled Jesse to safety. Gus calls the cartel, giving in to their demands; Gus invites Jesse over for dinner and asks him if he can cook Walt's formula. The next night, Jesse calls Walt to come over; he then explains that Gus is sending him to Mexico to show the cartel how to cook Walt's formula. Walt responds by asking him if he poisoned Gus; Jesse says he didn't see him. Walt knows he saw him, he says, because he put a bug on Jesse's car that showed he was at Gus's. Jesse, furious at Walt's distrust, throws the bug at him, cutting his forehead open. The two fight and Jesse gets the upper hand, punching Walt repeatedly in the face, then telling him to leave and never come back.

Doug has invited his friend Ray Barone, and his wife, Debra, over for dinner. Carrie has never met the Barones, and before they arrive at the house, Doug asks her to tone it down a little in order to make a better impression on his new friends. While the guys are left in the living room, Carrie and Debra talk in the kitchen about Doug's comment - and the two find a bond over both having insensitive husbands. Meanwhile, Doug and Ray get themselves into trouble while trying to watch a ball game on TV. The cable isn't working properly, so Doug and Ray try to fix it, resulting in Doug getting stuck halfway between the attic and the bedroom.

Peter decides to build a multiplex to top Joe's new theater, but comes across an Indian skull in his backyard. As a result, a poltergeist haunts the Griffins' house and spirits drag Stewie away to the other side, followed by even stranger events.

Dodd and Hanzee concoct a story - about Ed Blumquist being a hitman called "The Butcher" that was hired by Kansas City to kill Rye - trying to rile Floyd into bloody action. She responds by having a group of KC men ambushed by Hanzee and Gerhardt accomplices. Hanzee kills a Kitchen brother as well as Joe Bulo, and sends the latter's head to Mike Milligan. Mike threatens Simone during their next dalliance, demanding that she spy on her family for him. Meanwhile, Dodd sends his henchman Virgil to Luverne to kill Ed, and allows Bear's son, Charlie, to accompany him. In Luverne, Peggy takes Lou's warning seriously and plans to leave for California, but Ed insists on staying, as he is invested in his life there. Peggy nearly leaves without him, but having a change of heart, sells her car to mechanic Sonny Greer to get the down payment for the butcher shop. Virgil and Charlie arrive in Luverne and botch the attempt to kill Ed - Virgil is killed, Charlie is hospitalized, and the butcher shop goes up in flames. Ed returns home to Peggy, now wanting to leave town with her, but the police arrive shortly thereafter.

After being encouraged to be more of a daredevil by Burt, Jimmy jumps at the chance of showing off his bolder side at a party at Frank's house. Frank and Jimmy realize they have shared a common high school bully, and when they try to take him down, they realize their old bully has changed.
