While Manny is away visiting his father, Gloria and Jay are about to go on vacation, but their plans are interrupted when they accidentally send an insulting email to Claire. When they go to the Dunphys' house to apologize, they find Claire and Phil in a state of dismay because their kids have just walked in on them having sex. Meanwhile, Mitchell and Cameron have trouble getting reservations at a popular new restaurant, so they try to ingratiate themselves with the restaurant's owner, who is one of the parents at Lily's preschool.

A weakened, still-disguised Tommy knows where his son lives and attends school. Clare invites family and friends to a birthday party for Catherine - who does not want it. Tensions arise when Daniel lets slip some information about Becky and Tommy's old relationship, implying Catherine's allegation of rape leading to suicide may be untrue. Ashley is murdered in a drive-by shooting the day before he is due to be put into Witness Protection; the police reason someone higher up in the drug trade had heard of Ashley's whistleblowing and then silenced him. Tommy finds a way to see Ryan regularly without raising the child's family's suspicion but this soon turns into a dangerous hostage situation with Catherine on-scene. After many years, Catherine finally apprehends the brutal criminal Tommy Lee Royce. The series ends with Catherine standing on a high-leveled hill near Hebden Bridge, smiling into the camera.

Michael says goodbye to the family business and starts his own. And the life of the family is turned upside down when their mailman Pete dies.

When a beautiful young woman "hooks" Ted (keeping Ted in reserve as backup while she pursues her own dream boyfriend), the gang discusses their own experiences both as the one who "hooks" and the one on the hook.

Ted and Barney go out in the town to celebrate St. Patrick's Day as if there is no tomorrow, where Ted is seemingly rewarded for every bad behavior. Meanwhile, Lily and Marshall discover a major flaw with their new apartment, the floor is slanted. Robin helps them invent "roller luge". Ted finds a yellow umbrella that may be "Mother's".

After Pierce locks himself inside the panic room of his mansion, he calls on the study group to find the code that will unlock the room and let him out. The group searches the dark, scary mansion for the code, uncovering all sorts of secrets and oddities along the way.

During a pajama party to watch Robin's early morning talk show, Lily recounts her efforts to sabotage most of Ted's relationships after Ted's girlfriend, Karen, finds a woman's earring in his bed. Barney learns the pleasures of nightshirts, and after Karen and Ted break up, Ted and Robin promise to be each others' "back-up spouse".
