Gone Girl takes up the story of Nick and Amy Dunne's difficult marriage, which is floundering for several reasons. Nick, a former journalist of some seriousness, loses his job due to downsizing. In a somewhat desperate state of mind, he relocates himself and his wife from New York City to the small Midwestern town of North Carthage, Missouri, where Nick is from. There, he opens a bar, using the last of his wife's trust fund, and runs it along with his twin sister Margo. The bar provides a decent living for the three Dunnes, but the Dunne marriage becomes more and more dysfunctional. Amy loved her life in New York and hates what she considers the soulless "McMansion" which she and Nick are now renting.

Much to Audrey's dismay, Jeff's chauvinist father, who expects Audrey to wait on him hand and foot, extends his visit after spraining his ankle. Meanwhile, Russell has a one-night stand with a woman who won't leave his apartment.

Kristina is rushed to the hospital by an unlikely fried, while Julia and Joel receivepositivenews about a possible adoption. Jasmine's love life begins to affect Crosby, while Sarah's ex, Seth, threatens to disrupt her relationship with Mark. Meanwhile, Amber begins to understand Max's mind and helps him repair his friendship with Jabbar.

When a second fourth grade class comes in to Mrs. Krabappel's class during her absence, Bart falls for a girl named Nikki, who kisses him, then treats him like dirt. Meanwhile, First Lady Michelle Obama teaches Lisa that there is no shame in being an overachieving girl.

While trapped in the rubble, Cage reminisces about his past as Carl Lucas and his incarceration at Seagate Prison, a private detention facility run by C.O. Albert Rackham. He befriends fellow inmate Squabbles, develops an attraction to psychologist Dr. Reva Connors, and is forced to engage in illegal ring fights by Rackham, and crossed paths with inmates Alvarez and Comanche. Lucas and Connors plan to expose Rackham's activities, but Rackham learns of this by torturing Squabbles and has Lucas brutally beaten. Connors then convinces Dr. Noah Burstein, a scientist conducting experiments on the inmates, to perform the procedure on Lucas. Rackham sabotages the experiment, and the resulting accident gives Lucas his powers. He then escapes and adopts the identity of "Luke Cage". Cage manages to pull himself and Connie out of the rubble and reveals his abilities to the media.

Homer allows Barney to use his car when Barney is picked to be the designated driver for that night at Moe's Tavern. However, Barney disappears for two months with the car, and returns without it. Homer searches for his car, and eventually receives a letter from the City of New York. The family is excited to go there to obtain the car, but Homer, who had had a bad experience in New York when he was younger, is reluctant. After reaching New York City, Homer sees the car parked near the World Trade Center, where he must wait by so that an officer can remove the wheel clamp. He is distracted from standing watch for the police when he has to use the bathroom, and causes him to miss the police officer. Homer gets angry, and leaves the city with the clamp on.

Olivia says something she regrets during her appearance on Jimmy Fallon's talkshow and tries to keep Dan from finding out. With election day around the corner, Nate suspects his grandfather will stop at nothing to get Trip elected to congress. In the midst of another feud with Serena, Blair befriends a new "it" girl and takes her to an election night party at Chuck's hotel, hoping to make Serena jealous. Meanwhile, Vanessa becomes upset with Nate because of his schemes during the election. Title comes from the 1974 film The Godfather Part II.
