When Robin surprisingly forms a bond with the young son of the man she is dating, she decides it is too serious and must figure out a way to end her relationship and her friendship with the son.

In a flashback to Cicero, Illinois, Jimmy says goodbye to his friend and con artist partner Marco, telling him that he is moving to Albuquerque. In the present, Jimmy meets with Howard Hamlin to receive his $20,000 "of counsel" fee, and to discuss arrangements for delivering groceries and supplies to Chuck. After having a breakdown while calling Bingo at the retirement home, Jimmy then returns to Cicero where he catches up with Marco at their usual bar. They run a rare coin scam on an out-of-town businessman with a Kennedy half dollar. Over the next week, they run several successful scams. One morning, Jimmy explains to Marco that he is now an elder law attorney and must return to Albuquerque. Marco insists on one last fake Rolex scam for kicks but succumbs to a heart attack during the con. A grieving Jimmy, now wearing Marco's pinky ring, receives a phone call from Kim. A large Santa Fe firm, Davis & Mane, is assisting with the class action suit and considering Jimmy for partner. Jimmy returns to Albuquerque, but backs out of the Davis & Mane meeting. He asks Mike why they gave back the embezzled $1.6 million, then proclaims that whatever stopped him from taking it "is never stopping [him] again." Jimmy drives away, smiling and humming "Smoke on the Water", the same song Marco hummed whenever they pulled off the Rolex scam.

Stewie has begun teething; Lois explains to him that the pain will pass with time, so he decides to build a time machine. Lois asks Peter to take Chris to a soccer game. At the game, Peter punches a pregnant woman, and is put under house arrest. Peter decides to open a bar in his basement so that his friends will come to visit. The bar becomes a hot spot and Lois becomes upset until she has the opportunity to sing at the bar. Peter becomes jealous and gets his friend's wives to drag them out out of the bar. A cigarette starts a fire; when Peter and Lois finally become aware of it and attempt to escape, Stewie's time machine takes everyone back to the point in the episode when Lois asks Peter to take Chris to the game. This time, Peter trips over the time machine and destroys it.

Another billionaire, Arthur Fortune, captures Springfield's heart by handing each person a dollar. As a result, Mr. Burns looks for various ways to improve his image, recruiting Homer. However, his various schemes fail; for instance, when he makes Homer throw silver coins, the coins only injures the people. After being mocked by Rude on the show "Jerry Rude and the Bathroom Bunch", Burns sets out to capture the Loch Ness Monster. However, even this endeavor fails when the "monster" turns out to be cute and likeable. Out of options, Burns gives the Loch Ness Monster a job at the casino as Homer comments that being hated means you don't have to do anything.

Ted and Barney go out in the town to celebrate St. Patrick's Day as if there is no tomorrow, where Ted is seemingly rewarded for every bad behavior. Meanwhile, Lily and Marshall discover a major flaw with their new apartment, the floor is slanted. Robin helps them invent "roller luge". Ted finds a yellow umbrella that may be "Mother's".

Vince, Ari, and Dana receive Billy's script for Vince's next project. Even though Billy's interpretation is vastly different from the adaptation he was commissioned to write, Vince sees potential in the movie, so Ari attempts to keep the film alive, but he'll have to do so without Eric's help, since he's busy managing domestic issues between his new client Anna Faris and her needy boyfriend.

Ted and Robin get in their first fight. Lily and Robin chase Ted and Marshall on their night out.

In the fourth-season finale, the sighting of Jimmy's "ghost" is the talk of the firehouse; Colleen blames Tommy for her failed relationship, and Tommy figures out a way to fix his own. Meanwhile, Franco and Natalie come to an understanding, as do Lou, Mike and Latrina; Tommy and his father take in a ball game.
