A film adaptation of the book, the film chronicles the adventures of middle school student Greg Heffley and his best friend Rowley Jefferson over the course of an academic year, as told through Greg's journal and hand-drawn cartoons. The two best friends also have to get through some obstacles to get through middle school, such as surviving their weird neighborhood kid Fregley, having to wrestle a very tough girl named Patty Farrell, having to play outdoor Phys Ed games without shirts on, avoiding being killed by Greg's older brother, Rodrick, getting very embarrassed by Greg's mother, Susan, and, worst of all, trying to avoid getting the infamous cheese touch, which was started by Darren Walsh, and Greg would have gotten it if it weren't for Chirag Gupta.

Back in middle school after summer vacation, Greg Heffley and his older brother Rodrick must deal with their parents' misguided attempts to have them bond.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days is an upcoming comedy film directed by David Bowers from a screenplay by Wallace Wolodarsky and Maya Forbes. It stars Zachary Gordon and Steve Zahn. It is the third film in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid film series and is based on the third and fourth books in the series, The Last Straw and Dog Days. The film is set to be released on August 3, 2012.
