Moe's homemade alcohol pings the radar of venture capitalists, Grandpa gets hurt at home and finds Bart takes better care of him than the nursing home staff does, and Lisa complains about the "exploitation" of her dead jazz mentor Bleeding Gums Murphy after he 'performs' at a concert as a projected image.

Will's father Lonnie assures Joyce that her experiences are hallucinations. The boys conclude that Will is trapped in an alternative dimension which El calls the Upside-Down. After Will's funeral, the boys ask Mr. Clarke about dimensions, who he tells them that a spacetime tear could create a passage between dimensions. The deputies inform Hopper that Barb's car was found by the state; Hopper finds the state's involvement suspicious. Positing that an tear in spacetime would disrupt the electromagnetic field, the boys follow their compasses to find the source of the disruption. El remembers being placed in a sensory-deprivation tank to telekinetically intercept information from a Russian spy; while listening to the spy, she came across the creature. Scared of finding the gate, El directs the compasses away from the laboratory. Lucas notices the distortion and confronts her. Mike defends her, and he and Lucas fight. El telekinetically flings Lucas off Mike; Lucas recovers and runs away. In the woods, Nancy and Jonathan find a wounded deer, which the creature drags away. Following the blood trail, Nancy crawls through a passage to the Upside-Down world and discovers the creature feasting upon the deer.

Robin tries to keep her younger sister from losing her virginity, which prompts the group to recall their own first experiences.

After having his heart broken by the babysitter, a young Earl goes to drastic measures to make sure she and her boyfriend pay the ultimate price. Now older and wiser, Earl decides it's time to cross them off his list. When he finds the couple and their live-in, obnoxious, grown son, he believes karma wants him to help the freeloader learn how to make it on his own. But when Earl finds that the lesson in tough love also applies to Randy, he realizes the difficulty in kicking someone out of the nest. Meanwhile, Joy struggles to tell Darnell that she lost his beloved pet turtle.

Doug and Carrie are reminiscing about how they first met. Carrie was suppsoed to be on a date with Doug's friend Richie, and Doug was supposed to be with Carrie's friend Lynn. Their double date was terrible, and during the evening, Richie and Lynn decide that they are attracted to each other, leaving Doug and Carrie alone in Doug's apartment. They can't stand each other at the time, but through time they discover that they truly love each other.

In the episode, Michael and Dwight leave the office to buy a condo. Meanwhile, Jim organizes office games and gets his co-workers to play them.

Burt and Virginia go to extreme lengths to recover an antique clown doll, upon remembering that they had hidden their sex tape in it, but find the tape is missing. The two track down the couple (Mike O'Malley and Liza Snyder) who last owned the doll, and discover that the tape has changed the couple's life. Meanwhile, Sabrina tries to help Jimmy finally cure his sleepwalking problems, which he's had since childhood.

George wins an all expenses paid trip to Atlantic City. Tessa tries to be alone Scott.

A panicked Alex enlists Jane's help in convincing Dave that something he's certain happened never did using "The Kerkovich Way," an ancient Serbian memory-wiping technique passed down through the Kerkovich clan. Meanwhile, Penny and Max are determined to finally beat an annoyingly perfect couple (Morgan Walsh and Brice Williams) in the annual Rosalita's Run and Scavenger Hunt.
