The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a 2004 American traditional animated adventure comedy film based on the popular Nickelodeon television series SpongeBob SquarePants. The film was directed by the series' creator, Stephen Hillenburg, and stars the show's voice cast of Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Mr. Lawrence, and guest starring Scarlett Johansson as Mindy, Alec Baldwin as Dennis, Jeffrey Tambor as King Neptune, and features David Hasselhoff as himself. This film's plot is about Plankton's evil plan to steal Neptune's crown and send it to Shell City, where SpongeBob and Patrick must retrieve it and save Mr. Krabs' life from King Neptune's raft and their home, Bikini Bottom from Plankton's plan. It was released on November 19, 2004, and received positive reviews from critics and fans alike. This film was also a box office success, as it grossed over $140 million. It was produced and distributed in the United States by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. The film was dedicated to Jules Engel (1909–2003). The film had its own soundtrack released, as well as its own video game adaption. The film was well known for being the last adaption of the series to be aired before the departure of series creator Stephen Hillenburg. Tie-in promotions were made with several companies, including Burger King, McDonald's and Cayman Airways.
