Don runs into his old flame Midge, and learns her life has taken a disturbing turn. After executives from Philip Morris cancel a meeting for potential business, Don has a full-page ad printed in the New York Times announcing the firm will no longer represent tobacco companies, incensing the other partners and causing Bert Cooper to resign in protest. Sally is upset when Betty and Henry discuss moving the Francis family to nearby Rye. Layoffs begin in the wake of the agency's financial troubles, reducing the staff by about 50%.

Selina conducts negotiations with the Chinese president on a Christmas retreat intended to be family-only; Jonah inadvertently attracts a large supporter as the New Hampshire election approaches.

The gang consoles Marshall about his father's death as they all return to Minnesota upon learning of his bad news. Marshall's experiences inspire everyone, causing Barney to come to grips with reaching out to his father.

Lily and Marshall have trouble finding a nanny when Barney comes up with an elaborate scheme to meet girls. Meanwhile, Robin and Ted fight over whose relationship is more serious.

During a trip in London, Selina is bombarded with questions regarding the influence of Ray and his online beliefs, which have been recovered by Jonah; Dan has a breakdown which could work in Amy's favor. Selina makes some appearances, including a visit to a local pub and a speech at a War Service. The team learns of the suicide attempt of the First Lady.

The twenty-fifth annual Simpsons Halloween special includes parodies of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and The Others. In the segment spoofing The Others, the Simpsons are haunted by a family of ghosts that turns out to be their former selves from The Tracey Ullman Show.'School in Hell' inspired by the work of (British comic book author) Neil Gaiman.

Saving Mr. Banks is an upcoming biographical drama film directed by John Lee Hancock from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel. The film is about the production of the 1964 Walt Disney Studios film Mary Poppins and stars Tom Hanks as filmmaker Walt Disney and his attempts to obtain the screen rights to the eponymous book from author P. L. Travers, portrayed by Emma Thompson. Filming started on September 19, 2012. Walt Disney Pictures will produce and release the film theatrically in the United States on December 13, 2013 in select cities and in wide release a week later on December 20.
