The show's premise is based around the fictional Seaver family, who reside on Long Island, New York. Dr. Jason Seaver (Alan Thicke), a psychiatrist, works from home because his wife, Maggie Malone (Joanna Kerns), has gone back to work as a reporter. Jason has to take care of the kids: troublemaker Mike (Kirk Cameron), honors student Carol (Tracey Gold), and rambunctious Ben (Jeremy Miller). From 1988 on, Chrissy Seaver became a part of the family. She was played in her infant stage by twins Kristen and Kelsey Dohring. Beginning in the fall of 1990, Chrissy's character's age was advanced to six years old, whereupon Ashley Johnson took over the role. The show was relevant in the mid-1980s, as women going to work was becoming more and more common, as were stay-at-home dads.

Peter starts his own detective agency with Cleveland, Joe and Quagmire, who are shocked to find out Chris is a thief. Meanwhile, Lois worries for Chris after he becomes involved in a delusional relationship.

As the end of the school year approaches, Peyton considers accepting a music internship in Los Angeles. Brooke tries to reconnect with Chase through yearbook signatures. Haley struggles to write her valedictorian speech. Dan suggests that Lucas get professional help when Karen continues to worry about his obsession with theories about Keith's murder. This episode is named after a song by B.J. Thomas.

When a local art dealer is named a suspect in his wife's murder, the team re-investigates the 1968 death of a girl he was escorting to a debutante ball. The victim's mother sees her looking at the moon.

Exidor returns with a plan to become Emperor of Earth. In return for Mork's help, Exidor lets him use his summer home so Mindy can get some R&R, but the vacation does not go as planned.

The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump, an Alabama simpleton who travels across the world, meeting historical figures, influencing popular culture, and experiencing firsthand some of the historic events of the late 20th century.
