In 2017, people live in near-total isolation, rarely leaving the safety and comfort of their homes, thanks to remotely-controlled robotic bodies that serve as "surrogates," designed as better-looking versions of their human operators. Because people are safe all the time, and damage done to a surrogate is not felt by its owner, it is a peaceful world free from fear, pain, and crime. Tom Greer is an FBI agent who, through the use of his own surrogate, investigates the murder of Jarod Canter, who had inexplicably been killed in his dorm room while his surrogate was simultaneously destroyed elsewhere. Jarod is the son of Dr. Lionel Canter , the inventor of surrogates and ousted head of VSI, the corporation which manufactures them. Greer's investigation leads him to The Dreads, a group of people led by a mysterious man known only as The Prophet who is against the use of surrogates. Greer and his partner Jennifer Peters determine that the identity of the murderer is a Dread named Miles Strickland, who uses a unique weapon which kills the operator of the surrogate it destroys. Greer's surrogate is destroyed when it pursues Strickland into a Dread reservation. Strickland is then killed by his fellow Dreads, leaving the weapon in possession of The Prophet and Greer to physically interact with others without the use of a surrogate. He continues to investigate the case despite being put on suspension, and learns from Dr. Canter and a military officer that the weapon works by infecting a surrogate with a computer virus and disabling the fail-safe mechanisms which shield the operator from harm, thus killing them.

A Room With a View tells the story of Lucy Honeychurch, a young Englishwoman in 1912 who visits Italy with her cousin, Charlotte Bartlett. While there, they meet a host of interesting characters, including the novelist Eleanor Lavish, the tourist Mr Emerson, and his son, George. George falls in love with Lucy, while in Florence, but Charlotte whisks her charge away. It is only when they return to England that Lucy meets George again; by this time, however, Lucy is engaged to Cecil Vyse. While the novel ends with Lucy and George marrying and returning to "the room with the view" for their honeymoon, this adaptation included its own ending, with George being killed in World War I and Lucy returning in 1922 to the room in Florence

Persuasion tells the story of Anne Elliot and Captain Frederick Wentworth. Eight years prior to the film's beginning, Anne - at the age of 19 - was engaged to Wentworth. While her elder sister Elizabeth and her father Sir Walter set off for their new residence in Bath, Anne is left to take care of further business in Somersetshire, including taking care of her hypochondriac sister Mary Musgrove, married to Charles Musgrove and living in a nearby estate. Before she joins her father in Bath, Anne and Wentworth, on one of his visits to his sister Mrs Croft, meet once again. While staying with her sister Mary, Anne and Captain Wentworth are bound to meet frequently. Thereby, she has to witness Captain Wentworth's advances towards Charles Musgrove's young and lively sisters, especially to Louisa and wonders if he will ever forgive her or even love her again.

Three Sisters is a 1970 British drama film starring Alan Bates, Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright, based on the 1900 play by Anton Chekhov. Olivier also directed, with co-director John Sichel; it was the final feature film directed by Olivier. The film was based on a 1967 theatre production that Olivier had directed at the Royal National Theatre. Both the theatrical production and the film used the translation from the original Russian by Moura Budberg. The film was released in the U.S. in 1974 as part of the American Film Theatre. This was a series of thirteen film adaptations of stage plays shown to subscribers at about 500 movie theaters across the country.

Identical twins Sharon McKendrick and Susan Evers make each other's acquaintance at summer camp, not realizing at first that they are indeed sisters. At first rivals, pulling pranks on each other, their mischief ruins the camp dance. Their punishment is to live together in an isolated cabin where they bond. After both admitted they have come from broken homes, they soon learn that their parents Maggie and Mitch divorced shortly after the twins' birth, with each parent having custody of one daughter. While Susan is in Boston masquerading as Sharon, Sharon is in California masquerading as Susan.

The Spirit of '43 is an American animated World War II propaganda film created by Walt Disney Studios in 1943 and released in January 1943. The film stars Donald Duck, and arguably contains the first appearance of a prototype for the character Scrooge McDuck, not named in the film. It is a sequel to The New Spirit. The purpose of the film is to encourage patriotic Americans to file and pay their income taxes faithfully in order to help the war effort. The repeated theme in the film is "Taxes... To Defeat the Axis." The film, along with Der Fuehrer's Face and others like it, was released on DVD by Disney in 2004. The film is currently in the public domain and therefore can be seen on many gray market videos and DVDs. The title is an allusion to the expression "Spirit of '76" (referring to the sentiment around the American Revolution in 1776). In the film, Donald Duck is portrayed as an everyman who has just received his weekly pay. He is met by two physical manifestations of his personality — the classic "good angel on one shoulder, bad devil on the other shoulder" dilemma common to cartoons of the time — identified as the "thrifty saver" and the "spendthrift." The "good duck" appears as a slightly elderly duck with a Scottish accent who wears a kilt and Scottish cap and urges Donald to be thrifty with his money so he can be sure to pay his taxes for the war effort. The "bad duck" appears as a zoot suit-wearing hipster who urges Donald to spend his duly earned money on idle pleasures such as "good dates". The good angel reminds of other "dates": the dates when his taxes are due.[1] The narrator explains that Americans should "gladly and proudly" pay their income taxes which are higher that year "thanks to Hitler and Hirohito." A tug-of-war ensues between "spend" and "save" with Donald caught in the middle. Eventually the two sides give way and crash on opposite ends of Donald to reveal the "true" selves: the doors of the bad duck's club are revealed to be swastikas and the bad duck himself turns out to bear a resemblance to Hitler (his bow tie is now a swastika and he has grown Hitler's characteristic mustache), while the wall the good duck has crashed up against resembles the flag of the United States. The narrator then asks the audience if they are going to "spend for the Axis" or "save for taxes". Having made the seemingly obvious choice, Donald is assumed to shake hands with the bad duck, but it is revealed that he heads over to the bad duck to punch him out at the last second. He then goes to proudly pay his taxes with the good duck. The second part of the film is a montage entirely recycled from The New Spirit, showing how the taxes are being used to make planes, bombs, ships, and other war materials. It then shows them being used against Axis forces, along with the repeated slogan "Taxes... to (bury, sink, etc.) the Axis", accompanied by the opening bars of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (the "V for Victory" theme).

An Eskimo/Innuit starts out the winter by putting his "dog" (a sea lion) out in his "dog house" (tiny igloo) before he goes inside and sets his alarm clock for "July" and goes to sleep for the winter. When he gets up, he sees all the animals have also come back to enjoy the snowy summer. They all build a snowman and have fun dancing around him until he comes to life and turns into a monster. A Car-Tune Portrait is a cartoon in the Color Classics series produced by Fleischer Studios. Released on June 26, 1937, the cartoon gives an imaginative take on Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. The cartoon features a lion dressed up as a musical conductor, attempting to keep his orchestra of animal musicians in order as they half-play, half-fight their way through the piece. Memorable moments include a Dachshund playing the xylophone using his back legs while the rest of him sleeps, a group of monkeys using a flute as a pea-shooter to fire at their fellow musicians, and a horse trombonist who attempts to swat a fly using his instrument but who only succeeds in hitting the dog trumpeter in front of him. In keeping with the building frenzy of Liszt's rhapsody, the animals become more and more violent, playing pranks on each other and generally wreaking havoc; but still the piece goes on. The final scenes see the lion conductor smashed over the head with a giant bass drum, at which point he gives in, the music finishes and the cartoon ends.

Ub Iwerks created this 1934 Cinecolor cartoon based on the story entitled The Brave Tin Soldier. The cartoon's plot is slightly different from the original story. The antagonist is not a Jack-in-the-Box, but rather a toy king who wants the ballerina for himself. The tin soldier attacks the king, and as a result is put on trial and sentenced to death via firing squad. The ballerina pleads for his life to be spared, but her pleas go ignored. She then stands alongside the tin soldier and both are shot into a burning fireplace, where he melts into the shape of a heart with her. An actress is found standing over the body of a murdered colleague from her troupe, and has no memory of what happened. The ladies were known to have been enemies. At her trial the jury decides that she is either guilty or has schizophrenia and should be hanged lest she strike again. One juror, Sir John Menier, is not convinced and, using skills he has learned from the theatre, investigates the circumstances of the case. Sir John discovers who the real murderer is, and tries to lure a confession from him. The action comes to a thrilling climax at the circus.

Paranoid Park is a 2007 American-French drama film written and directed by Gus Van Sant. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Blake Nelson and takes place in Portland, Oregon. It stars Gabe Nevins as a teenage skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard.

Marvin Stussy, a dentist in St. Cloud is killed in the same manner as Ray. Emmit is interviewed by Gloria and talks freely about his manipulation of Ray in taking the stamps instead of the Corvette upon their father's death as well as his confession for accidentally killing Ray. Varga instructs Meemo to infiltrate the police station where Emmit is held to get him out. However, while Meemo is on the way, Nikki and Mr. Wrench ambush and commandeer his truck using a fake grenade. They steal financial information from the remote office inside to blackmail Varga for $2 million. Winnie alerts Gloria of the coincidental last name of the earlier assassination. George Stussy is also found murdered by asphyxiation in his kitchen, as Ennis was. Ex-con Donald Woo is picked up for the associated deaths from a witness viewing his plates and deliberately takes the fall for Emmit, admitting to all of the murders in his stead. Ruby, when interviewed at the station by Gloria about her dinner with Sy and Emmit, is vague about the details. The interview is interrupted by Chief Dammik's arrest of Woo, closing the case and resulting in Emmit's release, whose confession Dammik dismisses as Emmit's guilt over not helping his brother. Varga meets with Nikki, and in order to get out of the blackmailing he repeatedly attempts to hire her, but she refuses. Wrench neutralizes Varga's sniper, Meemo, and Nikki gives Varga 24 hours to pay her ransom or she sends the information to the IRS. Gloria reveals the other Stussy murders to a shocked Emmit and confronts him about Varga's control of the events. Meemo and Varga pick up Emmit as he is released. Grabbing drinks together, Winnie reassures a disheartened Gloria of her importance to the police profession. An anonymous package with the accounts payable files from Stussy Lots is left on the desk of IRS agent Larue Dollard (Hamish Linklater).

Ray and a still-recovering Nikki plot revenge against Yuri and Meemo but are forced to use caution when they see them with Varga. Emmit and Sy listen to Varga's plan to expand Stussy Lots by 16 garages within three months; Sy is wary, but Emmit seems eager. Gloria and Winnie want to question Emmit, but Varga curtails the meeting. The two officers then knock on Ray's apartment door, so he and Nikki check into a motel room, not knowing Varga has ordered a hit on them. Ray forgets the $10,000 and returns to his apartment to retrieve it. There he finds Emmit, who offers to end the feud by giving the framed stamp to his brother and anything else he may want. Ray is leery and they argue. When the frame accidentally breaks in a shoving match, a shard of glass severs Ray's carotid artery, killing him. A distraught Emmit calls Varga who manages the fallout, suggesting that Ray abused Nikki, causing previous injuries, and she retaliated. Gloria, driving out of St. Cloud, changes her mind and reverses course to go question Ray at his home.

Ray, again disguised as Emmit, makes a sex tape with Nikki to blackmail his brother of $100,000. However, Emmit's wife Stella sees the video first and angrily leaves him, taking her mother and children with her. Prior to making the video, Ray proposes to Nikki and she happily accepts. Back at Stussy Lots, Varga takes Sy's office and punishes Sy for talking to law enforcement. A worried Sy then has dinner with Ruby Goldfarb (Mary McDonnell), a wealthy widow interested in buying Stussy Lots, but is interrupted by a distraught Emmit, who asks Sy to handle the situation with his brother by any means necessary. While purchasing Ray's tuxedo for the wedding, Nikki gets a call from Sy telling her to meet him at one of Emmit's lots. Ray is interrogated by Gloria and Winnie about the situation with Sy and the Ennis Stussy murder. However, Chief Dammik, chalking up the situation to coincidence, forces the pair to release Ray. Emmit has a meeting with Varga, who states his distrust towards Sy and suggests Sy and Ray may be working together to bring down Emmit. Nikki meets with Sy but their meeting is interrupted by Yuri and Meemo, who brutally beat Nikki as a traumatized Sy watches before fleeing. Ray returns home to find a badly bruised Nikki collapsed in an ice-filled bathtub.

Elliot declines a job offer from Tyrell Wellick, interim CTO of E Corp. Elliot, increasingly paranoid, uses more morphine than normal. Darlene visits him at home to bring him to fsociety, surprising him. Mr. Robot and fsociety want Elliot to hack into a gas plant and cause an explosion, destroying the adjacent offline backup facility used by E Corp; Steel Mountain. However, Elliot does not want to risk lives - and backs out. Shayla's supplier Fernando Vera shows signs of abusing Shayla so Elliot gathers information against him, and when Vera rapes Shayla, Elliot turns him in despite Shayla's explicit instructions not to. Meanwhile, Ollie's computer gets hacked by an unknown man named Cisco, who is shown to be an associate of the Chinese hacker group, The Dark Army. In the closing scene, Elliot and Mr. Robot discuss Elliot's falling out with his father - Mr. Robot pushes Elliot off a railing onto the rock-strewn beach below as punishment for not keeping his father's disease a secret and betraying his trust.

When the group prepares to leave thinking the building is empty, Rick notices the camera moving and begs for his group to be allowed in. The doors open as the group of survivors look on, astonished.

Following an angry meeting with the commissioner, Homer decides to run for his position. Homer's campaigning fails to win much support, until he promises the town that they will no longer need to do any garbage-related work. This causes Homer to win in a landslide. Initially, Homer is able is keep his promise, but he uses an entire year's budget in a month, causing the workers to go on strike, fearing they will not be paid. Homer makes a deal with neighboring towns to dump their trash in Springfield's abandoned mines to make money, but when the mines are filled, trash starts to burst out of the ground. The town is then forced to completely move five miles away.

Stranger in a Strange Land is a 1961 science fiction novel by American author Robert A. Heinlein.
