Love is in the air as the inmates prepare for a Valentine's Day party; Red makes an intriguing new discovery. Larry asks Piper to be his prison mole. Flashbacks detail Poussey's romantic history with a German girl whilst living on an army base with her father. When the two are caught making love, Poussey and her family are transferred away from the base. Whilst confronting her girlfriend's father, Poussey is ready to pull out a gun and attack him but her own father intervenes and stops her. At the Valentine's Party held at Litchfield, Pennsatucky is outlawed from her former group of friends by Leanne. Poussey and Taystee argue. Flaca and Maritza share an intimate moment in the kitchen.

The inmates campaign along racial lines for positions on a prisoners council, but Piper tries to stay above the increasingly raucous competition.

After waking up from a coma, Earl now knew what was important in his life and he was set on going after it. He knew that he had to find Billie, whom he felt karma brought to him to be his soul mate. However, no one knew where to find Billie and so Earl turned to an unlikely place, Frank. Elsewhere, Darnell and Joy have moved into the Crab Shack, since their trailer is still turned on its side (from the events in "Bad Earl").

Brooke has a crush on the new bartender Owen. Carrie kisses Nathan. Haley is upset at Lucas for proposing to Lindsay and kissing Peyton. Quentin has to change his negative approach before the Ravens start the season-opening game. Alice quits her job as boss and Mouth tries to win Millicent. This episode is named after a song by The Smiths.

On January 8, Tom Hansen meets Summer Finn, the new assistant to his boss. Tom trained as an architect but works as a writer at a greeting card company, living in Los Angeles. Following a karaoke night, Tom's co-worker, McKenzie, lets slip that Tom is attracted to Summer. Over the next few months Summer and Tom grow closer, despite Summer making it clear to Tom that she does not believe in true love, and does not want a boyfriend.
