The show, a drama aimed at the teenage market and set in San Francisco, centered on five siblings who grow up orphans after their parents were killed by a drunk driver in an auto accident. 24-year-old Charlie Salinger, the eldest sibling, became legal guardian to his four younger siblings: 16-year-old Bailey, 15-year-old Julia, 11-year-old Claudia, and infant Owen. The title of the show refers to the kids being seated as a party of five at their late father's restaurant.

On a bustling shopping day in winter, Jonathan Trager meets Sara Thomas when both try to buy the same pair of gloves at Bloomingdale's department store. Two strangers amid the masses in New York City, their paths collide in the mad holiday rush as they feel a mutual attraction. Despite the fact that each is involved in another relationship, Jonathan and Sara spend the evening traveling Manhattan. But when the night reaches its inevitable end, the two are forced into determining some kind of next step. When the smitten Jonathan suggests an exchange of phone numbers, Sara balks and proposes an idea that will allow fate to take control of their future. Sara asks Jonathan to write his name and phone number on a dollar bill, while she writes her name and number on the inside cover of a used copy of Love in the Time of Cholera. If they are meant to be together, she tells him, they will find their way back into one another's life.

Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski is the ultimate L.A. slacker, until the day his house is broken into and his rug is ruined by two angry gangsters who have mistaken him for Jeffrey Lebowski, the L.A. millionaire, whose wife owes big money to some very bad people. "The Dude" becomes mixed up in the crazy plot when he goes to visit the real Lebowski in order to get some retribution for his soiled rug, and is recruited to be the liason between Lebowski and the captors of his now "kidnapped" wife.
