Cathy sees Dr. Sherman (Alan Alda) and is excited to get into his latest medical trial only to learn it's full. Rebecca continues to try and get Sean to sleep in the house with her, as she begins to wear Cathy out planning parties and focusing on other things than her cancer. A spot opens up in Dr. Sherman's trial though Cathy is saddened to learn its only opened because a woman died, shaking her confidence in Dr. Sherman. Cathy returns to work to discover everyone knows of her condition, making her feel awkward though Andrea treats her with the same rudeness Cathy likes. She throws a baby shower for Rebecca, she and Sean make up, and Cathy regains her belief that Dr. Sherman's trial can help.

Jim feels guilty when he is in a fight and he dodges a bullet, which hits a child and causes life-threatening damage. Daphne's boyfriend Chris steals the serum from the Powells' house and injects his disabled father Roy, causing disastrous results creating a villain stronger then Jim . Joshua, The Watcher, proposes to Katie. JJ's math teacher tries to get him to join the school's academic decathlon team.

Everybody hates the Christmas photo card that Joel obsesses over every year. But, when Ben is left out of the card, he gets really hurt that Joel invites Casey instead, so he and Maddie devise a revenge Christmas card. Meanwhile, Mia and Casey are finding it hard to say "no", so they ask Maddie and Ben to do the hard work for their future baby.

Robert gives Ray a great idea of what to get Debra for Christmas, but is angry when Ray takes all the credit.

Accused of robbing a bank, Fry and Bender plead insanity and are both sent to a robot insane asylum. While Bender and his buddy Roberto plan an escape, Fry is brainwashed into thinking that he is a robot.
