Sam, Gilly and her child leave for Oldtown for Sam to become a maester. Selyse hangs herself and half of Stannis' forces desert him; Stannis is defeated by the Boltons and apparently killed by Brienne, while Melisandre flees to Castle Black. Sansa escapes her room, but is caught by Myranda. Reek kills Myranda and he and Sansa escape from Winterfell by jumping off the castle walls. Cersei confesses to sleeping with Lancel and is forced to walk naked to the Red Keep, as the crowd jeers, spits, and flings filth at her. She is received by the Small Council, with Qyburn introducing a new member of the Kingsguard. Jaime, Myrcella, Bronn and Trystane sail from Dorne. After Myrcella tells Jaime that she knows he is her father, she collapses from being poisoned by Ellaria. Arya infiltrates a brothel and kills Ser Meryn. Jaqen appears to take his own life to repay the Many-faced God for the life stolen by Arya, and Arya is blinded. Varys arrives in Meereen to rule the city with Tyrion, Grey Worm and Missandei, while Daario and Jorah search for Daenerys, who, far away, is found by a large group of Dothraki and surrounded by their warriors. At Castle Black a group of brothers, including Alliser and Olly, mutiny against Jon, stabbing him and then leaving him to die.

During a snowstorm, Stannis' camp is sabotaged when Ramsay's force of twenty men completely destroy the entire camp's siege equipment and food stores, while inflicting heavy losses on the army's horses. Melisandre insists they must make a sacrifice of King's Blood to reach Winterfell. Stannis reluctantly offers his daughter, Princess Shireen, burning her alive at the stake, while she desperately cries out for her parents. Jon and the wildlings return to the Wall, where their welcome is fraught with tension. In Dorne, Prince Doran permits Jaime to return to King's Landing with Myrcella, provided Trystane accompany them and serve on the small council in Oberyn's stead. In Meereen, the fights at Daznak's pit begin, and Daenerys is stunned to see Jorah amongst the combatants. Although he is successful, his triumph is interrupted by a fierce attack by the Sons of the Harpy, who quickly surround Daenerys and her supporters. Just as all hope seems lost, Drogon arrives, and Daenerys mounts her dragon and flies away from Meereen, her followers and enemies watching alike in awe.

The Sparrows arrest Loras Tyrell. Margaery is enraged, but Tommen proves too weak to arrange his release. Melisandre tries to seduce Jon Snow in an attempt to convince Snow to go to Winterfell with Stannis. In the crypts of Winterfell, Baelish reveals he has been summoned to return to King's Landing by Cersei. Before leaving, he tries to dispel Sansa's misgivings towards Ramsay Bolton, telling her that even if Stannis does not defeat the Boltons and rescue her, she can easily manipulate Ramsay. Bronn and Jaime land secretly in Dorne; they encounter and kill four horsemen, then use their clothes and gear as disguises. The Sand Snakes learn from a sea captain that Jaime has come to Dorne for Myrcella; Ellaria convinces the Sand Snakes to plan to avenge the death of Oberyn by abducting Myrcella before Jaime can intervene. Ser Jorah plans to redeem himself to Daenerys by giving Tyrion to her as a prisoner. In Meereen, Hizdahr zo Loraq makes another appeal to Daenerys to reopen the fighting pits; the Sons of the Harpy run amok and ambush an Unsullied patrol inside the citadel; Grey Worm is critically wounded and Ser Barristan is killed.

Jon Snow treats with Mance Rayder, but their negotiations are interrupted when Stannis Baratheon and his army suddenly overrun the wildling camp and take Mance prisoner. Later, the Night's Watch burn the bodies of their dead while Jon burns Ygritte beyond the wall. Bran and his party come upon the large Heart Tree from his visions, but as they arrive they are attacked by wights; though Jojen is killed, Bran, Hodor and Meera are saved by a child of the forest who takes them to the three-eyed raven. In Meereen, Daenerys responds to a former slave's wish of being sold into slavery again by allowing him to contract his labor to his former master on a yearly basis. The next citizen brings her the charred remains of his daughter who was burned by one of her dragons. As a precaution, Daenerys chains her other dragons in the catacombs. In the Vale, Brienne and Podrick come upon Arya and the Hound. Brienne mortally wounds the Hound, while Arya escapes. Meanwhile in King's Landing, Cersei orders Qyburn to do anything to save the Mountain, who is dying of wounds from Oberyn's poisoned spear. She confronts her father, threatening to reveal her and Jaime's incestuous affairs if she is forced to marry Loras (after which, she rekindles that same affair). Tyrion is released from his cell by Jaime, but he later finds Shae in Tywin's bed and kills her. He then confronts his father in the privy and shoots him with Joffrey's crossbow, before escaping the city with Varys. The season ends with Arya buying passage on a ship bound for Braavos with the coin Jaqen H'ghar gave her.

In Essos, Stannis and Davos travel to Braavos to appeal to the Iron Bank to grant them a loan. While the Iron Bank is reluctant at first, Davos manages to convince them to back Stannis. In Meereen, Daenerys attempts to take on her new role as Queen as she listens to the requests of her subjects. At the Dreadfort, Yara leads an attack in an effort to rescue Theon but fails when Theon refuses to come with her. After seeing Theon's current state as Reek, Yara tells her men that Theon is dead. In King's Landing, Tywin puts a price on the Hound's head and instructs Varys to continue spying on Daenerys. Later that day, Tyrion is brought to trial for Joffrey's murder. However, all of the witnesses brought in testify against him, including Shae. Angry and broken, Tyrion demands that his fate be determined in a trial by combat.

Daenerys successfully captures Meereen amidst a slave revolt, and immediately seeks justice for the slain slave children by nailing 163 masters to posts. At sea, Petyr admits to Sansa that he was responsible for poisoning Joffrey, despite his alliance with the Lannisters. In King's Landing, Olenna also intimates to Margaery that she ordered the poisoning, and encourages Margaery to seduce Tommen before Cersei has a chance to turn him against her. Jaime meets with Tyrion, and is convinced he is not guilty. However, Cersei is adamant about Tyrion's guilt, and orders Jaime to hunt down and kill Sansa. Jaime instead tasks Brienne with finding and protecting Sansa, and sends Podrick along with her. In the North, in an effort to get rid of Jon, Alliser allows Jon to lead an expedition against the Night's Watch mutineers occupying Craster's Keep. Meanwhile, Bran and his party stumble upon Craster's Keep, where they are captured by the mutineers, and Bran is forced to reveal his identity to them. Further north, a White Walker takes Craster's last newborn son to a secret ritual site, where another White Walker touches the baby's face, turning its eyes blue.

Tywin Lannister oversees the reforging of Ice, the Stark ancestral sword, into two new swords. He gives one to his son Jaime, who tries and fails to return to his earlier life before the loss of his sword hand. Prince Oberyn, brother of Prince Doran Martell of Dorne, arrives in King's Landing with his paramour Ellaria Sand to attend the royal wedding in his place and is welcomed by Tyrion Lannister, and later reveals his true plans for his visit: revenge against the Lannisters for the rape and death of his sister, Elia. In the North, while Styr and his group of cannibal Thenns reinforce Tormund Giantsbane and the other wildlings, Jon Snow has returned to Castle Black and is released after confessing what he did during his stay with the wildings. Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen leads her army on a march towards Meereen, the last of the three great slave cities, though she is troubled by how her dragons grow less tame as they grow larger. In the Riverlands, Arya, accompanied by Sandor "The Hound" Clegane, reclaims her sword Needle from Polliver, and uses it to kill him the same way he murdered Lommy Greenhands, as retribution for her friend.

House Frey receives the Seat of Riverrun, Roose Bolton is appointed the new "Warden of the North", resulting in a victory of House Lannister. Arya and the Hound witness Frey soldiers parade Robb’s decapitated corpse around the keep with the head of Robb’s wolf. While coming upon four Frey men discussing the murder, Arya slips off and kills one of the soldiers and is then assisted by the Hound who dispatches the others. Meanwhile House Greyjoy begins a new military campaign to recapture Theon who is being held at Dreadfort by Lord Bolton's bastard son Ramsay. In King’s Landing, Tywin chastises Tyrion for not having impregnated Sansa and reiterates the importance of family. Jaime and Brienne arrive in the capital, and Jaime immediately goes to see Cersei. In the North, after meeting with Sam, Maester Aemon sends out ravens to alert the whole of Westeros about the arrival of the White Walkers. Sam gives Bran and his entourage information about a passage to North of the wall. Ygritte shoots three arrows and hits Jon when she catches up to him. Jon manages to escape and seeks help at Castle Black. At Dragonstone, Davos allows Gendry to escape and Stannis receives the raven flown message about the White Walkers. And across the narrow sea, slaves of Yunkai receive Daenerys as their "mhysa", meaning "mother" in Ghiscari.

Jaime steals a sword and tries to fight his captors, but he is immediately defeated and recaptured. Varys tells Tyrion how he became a eunuch, and that he now has in his power the magician who castrated him. Bran, with the aid of Jojen Reed, continues to chase the three-eyed crow. At Craster's keep, the surviving Night's Watch, starving, come into conflict with their host. Craster and the Lord Commander are slain in the struggle and Sam flees with Gilly and her son. Arya and Gendry are taken to the secret cave of the Brotherhood without Banners where they meet their leader, Beric Dondarrion, who later sentences the Hound to trial by combat with him. Theon Greyjoy is betrayed by the cleaning boy, who returns him to the prison for torture. Daenerys meets with Kraznys to complete the trade of a dragon for the Unsullied army. She tests the Unsullied, then orders them to kill their former masters, reclaims her dragon and frees the Unsullied, her new army.

Some Night's Watch men, Samwell Tarly and Lord Commander Mormont among them, survive the White Walkers' attack and pledge to return to the Wall to warn the Seven Kingdoms. Jon Snow is brought before Mance Rayder, the "King beyond the Wall", and pledges his loyalty to the Wildlings. A scarred Tyrion Lannister unsuccessfully solicits recognition by his father Tywin, the new Hand of the King. Margaery Tyrell engages in charity work with the orphans of King's Landing. Ser Davos Seaworth is rescued by Salladhor Saan after the Battle of the Blackwater and returned to Dragonstone. There, he unsuccessfully tries to kill Melisandre so as to break her hold on Stannis Baratheon, and is imprisoned. Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen arrives in the city of Astapor to buy an army of brutally-trained slave soldiers, the "Unsullied". She is saved from an assassination attempt by the warlocks of Qarth by Ser Barristan Selmy, the former Kingsguard commander, who pledges his loyalty.

As the Stark and Lannister armies prepare for their first battle against each other, Tyrion leads his barbarian allies into battle while Robb and Catelyn make a deal with Lord Frey to help them in their war. With Drogo dying from his infected wound, Daenerys goes to desperate measures to save her husband's life by using Mirri's blood magic, much to the Dothrakis' horror. Aemon reveals his identity as a Targaryen, and the price of loyalty, to Jon, who worries about events outside of the Wall. Ned makes a deal with the Lannisters by making a false confession and accepting Joffrey as the rightful King in order to save his daughter's lives; but Ned's act ends in vain as Joffrey, citing the "soft hearts of women," has him executed regardless.

As the Lannisters press their advantage over the Starks, Robb rallies his family's allies to war. Sansa pleads to Joffrey for her father's life while Ned, still captive in the dungeons, finds an unexpected ally in Lord Varys.

Ned joins the Small Council at King's Landing and learns just how poorly the Seven Kingdoms are being managed. Catelyn decides to go covertly to the South to warn her husband, but is intercepted by an old friend, Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish. Jon struggles to adapt to life on the Wall, as he trains with a number of low-born recruits who are not impressed by his bloodline. Tyrion, also visiting the Wall, is beseeched by a desperate Lord Mormont to plead the case for more soldiers to join the Night's Watch to the King and Queen. Bran, now awake, is unable to recall how he fell. Daenerys, now possessing no small measure of control as Khaleesi, begins to stand up to Viserys.

Bran's fate remains in doubt. Having agreed to become the King's Hand, Ned leaves Winterfell with his daughters Sansa and Arya, while Catelyn stays behind to tend to Bran. Jon Snow heads north to join the brotherhood of the Night's Watch. Tyrion decides to forego the trip south with his family, instead joining Jon's entourage heading to the Wall. Viserys bides his time in hopes of winning back the throne, while Daenerys focuses her attention on learning how to please her new husband, Drogo.

The Starks of Winterfell receive the visit of the royal family. King Robert Baratheon makes Eddard Stark, the Lord of Winterfell, an offer he can't refuse. Across the narrow sea, the exiled Prince Viserys Targaryen forges a new alliance to regain the Iron Throne; he will trade his sister Daenerys in marriage to the savage warlord Khal Drogo in exchange for Drogo's army. Back in Winterfell, Catelyn Stark receives a clue that may implicate members of the royal family in a murder, and young Bran Stark makes a jaw-dropping discovery.
