In this episode, the whole Office participates in a company-wide weight loss contest. Pam goes to New York City for art school, causing her and Jim to have to adjust to being temporarily apart. Also, awkward tension is created between Michael and Holly after she accepts a date with another man, and Angela and Dwight continue their secret relationship, Angela's upcoming marriage to Andy notwithstanding. The episode was voted the second best episode of the season in a poll at the fan site OfficeTally.

Christmas time at the office leads to depression for Michael, when his girlfriend Carol breaks up with him. Michael, Andy, Dwight, and Jim then go to a local Benihana's, where both Michael and Andy find dates with two of the restaurant's waitresses. Back at the office, an altercation with Angela on the Party Planning Committee leads Karen and Pam to create their own Christmas party. When the majority of the office decide to go to Karen and Pam's party, Angela becomes upset, and seeing this, Karen and Pam decide to combine the parties. Soon after, Michael and Andy's dates leave them, but Michael nevertheless finds someone to go to Jamaica with him.

"Pilot" introduces each of the main characters as employees of the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, as well as establishes the basic premises of the series.
