Stan finds a folder of cartoons Lou is drawing, and the creative team jokes about them. After Sally and some classmates "sword-fight with golf clubs," she is sent home from boarding school with a broken nose. Stephanie, Anna Draper's niece, is pregnant and running out of money in L.A. and calls Don for help. Don asks Megan if Stephanie can temporarily stay with her. Megan accepts, until Stephanie claims to know all of Don's secrets, at which point Megan writes her a check for $1,000 and Stephanie leaves. When Betty voices her opinion on the Vietnam War at a dinner party, Henry tells her to limit conversations to "how much you hate getting toast crumbs in the butter." Don visits Megan in L.A. but is disappointed that Stephanie has left. Megan hosts a party for her acting friends that Harry Crane unexpectedly attends. Sensing the awkwardness, Harry and Don go out to a bar where Harry suggests that Don should be working in L.A., because Ted Chaough is "useless" and Lou and Cutler are pursuing Commander cigarettes, a Philip Morris brand. In 2002, Cohle investigates on his own a series of old missing persons cases, linking the victims to the Tuttle schools. He seeks out Theriot, who has since quit the ministry and become a drunk, to ask about Wellspring, a defunct foundation that financed the rural schools while Theriot was a seminarian at the college Tuttle established. Theriot claims that Wellspring covered up child molestation scandals and implies that he was intimidated into silence after being questioned in 1995. Cohle tries to interview Kelly, Ledoux's surviving victim in 1995 and institutionalized with regressive catatonia, to ask her if a third man was involved with her abduction. She describes a giant man with scars, and begins screaming when Cohle asks about the man's face. Despite being ordered to stop his investigations, Cohle meets with Tuttle, ostensibly seeking the names of former Wellspring employees but actually fishing for reactions from him. Tuttle complains to the department, misrepresenting the nature of the meeting. Cohle cites this as proof of Tuttle's culpability, but is suspended from duty anyway. Hart runs into Beth (Lili Simmons), a former underage prostitute he interviewed during the Dora Lange investigation, and starts an affair with her. A suspicious Maggie checks Hart's cell and finds a picture of Beth. She goes to Cohle's apartment and seduces him; Cohle, disgusted and infuriated when Maggie tells him she had sex to get rid of Hart, kicks her out. Maggie tells Hart anyway, who attacks Cohle in the department parking lot. Cohle quits immediately after. In 2012, Papania and Gilbough interview Maggie, now remarried. She is scornful of their motives and denies that the divorce from Hart had anything to do with Cohle. Asked to characterize Cohle, she describes him as a good man with integrity. Hart abruptly walks out on his interview when Papania and Gilbrough again suggest that Cohle may have killed Tuttle in 2010 and been responsible for all the other murders. Cohle follows Hart and initiates their first contact since the fight. Cohle asks Hart to buy him a beer, saying they should talk, to which Hart agrees, but after Cohle turns away, arms himself with a revolver.

Raylan is on his way to visit a couple of prisoners, including his dad, when he finds out that a person he delivered to bail bondsmen escaped and killed Raylan's female acquaintance and her partner. Raylan eventually finds this escapee at the bar below where Raylan lives, and shoots him in a standoff. Raylan visits his dad in prison. Raylan tells him he will get him transferred to a country club prison if Arlo tells him where Drew is and that's the best deal Raylan is willing to offer. Arlo dismisses the offer. Raylan tells his dad he does not really care if he is killed in prison by associates of the Detroit mob that are also looking for Thompson. Raylan leaves his dad after telling his dad that he is on his way to see the ex-sheriff Hunter Mosley. Hunter was a dirty cop that worked for the Miami mob; Raylan took him down in Season 1, Episode 7 ("Blind Spot"). He helped the Miami mob try to kill Raylan in season one. In a separate plotline, Boyd is no closer to finding Drew Thompson at a house party with wealthy people from Harlan. Some of the partygoers ask Boyd to kill someone for him or they will shut down Boyd's brothel.

Jimmy McNulty is sidelined to harbor patrol. He discovers a corpse in the harbor and pays back Colonel Rawls by proving City Homicide bear responsibility for the investigation. Major Valchek feels slighted when the boss of a local stevedore union named Frank Sobotka donates a more impressive gift to a local Polish church. Sobotka meets with other union leaders and learns that a crucial pier is still in a state of disrepair. Sobotka instructs his nephew Nick to see The Greek regarding payment for a clandestine container that he is smuggling through the port. Later, Port Police Officer "Beadie" Russell stumbles across The Greek's container and discovers the bodies of over a dozen young women inside.
