As the summer draws to a close in the Hamptons, Serena and Nate have everyone fooled into thinking they are a couple to cover up the fact that Nate has been hooking up with an older, married woman named Catherine . Blair returns from abroad with a hot guy on her arm, making a very jealous Chuck question his decision to leave Blair stranded at the heliport. Dan has spent the summer assisting a famous author, and clearly still has one certain girl on his mind, which results in him going after her. While interning for Eleanor Waldorf's company, Jenny sneaks an invite to a much-coveted Hamptons' White Party at which Eric introduces her to socialite Tinsley Mortimer. Title comes from the 1987 film Some Kind of Wonderful.

After Dr. Bailey is called into surgery, Cristina is forced to watch baby Tucker for the remainder of the day. Meanwhile, George and Meredith are still on the outs as she confides in Derek with her problem. Izzie continues to warm up to Denny who is having problems breathing. George and Callie further their flirtations over a teenaged patient who decides to chop off his own finger after Callie refuses to do it for him. Burke shows a preference for living with George over Cristina, and Addison gets a long-awaited admission from Derek that shows some hope for their marriage after all.

Adele cuts her vacation short to come and care for Dr. Webber who is still recovering from surgery. Cristina and Meredith both express a great deal of bitterness toward their past doctoral flames. After having worked with nurse Olivia all day, George admits that he likes someone else. Alex and Izzie treat the victims from a car crash where the father needs a liver transplant, but his son doesn't want to donate because of the way his father abuses his mother. Bailey treats a man who has swallowed the heads of ten Judy dolls.

Nate hangs with friends from high school; Brenda starts her internship; Maggie gives Ruth much needed relief.

Derek spends the night at Meredith's, which they try to keep secret from her other roommates. George suspects an anesthesiologist of drinking before major surgeries but is scolded when he does speak up. Alex treats a man who enjoys being in pain, and Cristina catches the flu.

When Shepherd picks Meredith to assist in surgery on a patient with Parkinson's disease, Bailey thinks he is showing favoritism and is tough on Meredith. Alex befriends a patient who has a very large tumor, but when he talks about her behind her back, she requests he be removed from her case.

Ruth throws a birthday dinner for David who is struggling in the aftermath of his carjacking; Claire gets "closer" with some friends; Vanessa begins to suspect Rico's infedelity.

Julie and Caleb officially get married, as Ryan and Theresa face a difficult decision regarding her pregnancy. Marissa moves into Caleb and Julie's new castle on the cliff, and Seth struggles to find himself when things around him seem to fall apart. Life in The O.C. comes full circle from one year before.
