The twenty-fifth annual Simpsons Halloween special includes parodies of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and The Others. In the segment spoofing The Others, the Simpsons are haunted by a family of ghosts that turns out to be their former selves from The Tracey Ullman Show.'School in Hell' inspired by the work of (British comic book author) Neil Gaiman.

Catherine is still haunted by Kirsten's death, and her depression spurs her on her quest to find Tommy Lee Royce. Realising that the net is closing in on them, Ashley orders Tommy to dispose of Ann, but instead Royce holds her prisoner in his mother's cellar. Following her hunch, Catherine manages to speak with Helen face to face and is stunned when Helen admits everything. With everything falling into place, Catherine's heroic actions are shattered when Royce murderously assaults her, leaving both Ann and Catherine to fight for their lives.

Before his speech ends, he realises that a murderer is present among the guests intent on killing a fellow guest. Sherlock informs John and Mary of the meaning of the sign of three. The title is based on the Holmes novel The Sign of the Four.

Margaret does an insider-deal for Rothstein in return for new lodgings. Capone, while trying to nudge Torrio into retirement, is saved by Van Alden from a tommy-gun ambush. Despite Tolliver's turning of Eli, Hoover's still uninterested in scotching the bootleggers' network. Nucky's forced into a deal with Narcisse after learning he's Masseria's partner on the heroin pipeline. Nucky promises Chalky to Narcisse but tells Mayor Bader to have cops slip Chalky out of town; too late, though, he discovers through Willie that Bader is in Narcisse's pocket. Chalky and Daughter narrowly escape the cops' clutches; Narcisse eyes Maybelle; Nucky, Eli, and Willie gather to decide the Thompsons' next move.

At the Miss Mystic Falls contest, Damon tells Elena that Stefan has been drinking human blood again. Stefan gets angry when Elena confronts him with this information, and breaks a mirror. To his despair, one of the Miss Mystic Falls contestants sees him do this, so Stefan takes her. Back at the dance, Damon poses as Elena's escort, since Stefan was not there. Meanwhile, John Gilbert tries unsuccessfully to intimidate Damon.

Colleen dies and her husband Pickett takes out his anger by beating Sawyer. Sawyer is deceived into thinking that a pacemaker has been implanted in him and that his heart will explode if his heart rate exceeds 140 bpm. Ben reveals to Sawyer that trying to escape is futile because they are on a separate island off the coast of the island where the survivors' camp is. In flashbacks, Sawyer cons his way out of prison and finds out that he has a daughter. After claiming that he doesn't care about her, he anonymously gives a large sum of money to his daughter.

Bender is accidentally shot out of the ship's torpedo tube and becomes lost in space. Floating through the ethereal darkness, Bender becomes inhabited with tiny alien life forms, but has trouble playing God to their unyielding prayers.

The Fishers hire a new embalmer, Angela. Ruth goes on a first date with Nikolai. Brenda learns some hidden truths about her brother, Billy.

While attending Maggie's first birthday party, Grampa falls for Marge's mother Jackie. Grampa and Jackie start dating, but he is soon pushed aside in favor of Mr. Burns. Burns and Jackie are soon engaged to be married, much to the chagrin of Marge and Smithers. Grampa crashes the wedding and tries to get Jackie back, but she decides that she doesn't want to be married. Meanwhile, Bart steals Homer's credit card to buy a piece of Itchy and Scratchy memorabilia that turns out to be a rip-off.

NASA decides that they need to hire average joes in order to get higher television ratings. They recruit Homer and Barney to train to be the first average American in space. Homer, who wants to be respected, is the winner by default, and goes into space with Buzz Aldrin. While there, he causes a lot of havoc and eventually breaks the handle on the space shuttle's hatch. Homer inadvertently seals the door shut with an inanimate carbon rod, and the shuttle returns to Earth. The rod is hailed as a hero, but Homer gains the respect of his family.

When Lisa requires a new saxophone reed for her talent recital, she asks Homer, who immediately promises to buy her one. Though when Homer breaks his promise, he makes up for it by giving Lisa the one thing she had always wanted, a pony named Princess. With a new pony in the house, Homer struggles with two jobs to cover the cost. Lisa, upon seeing what Homer must go through to pay for the pony, decides to sell it.

Rango is a pet chameleon who lives in a terrarium. He has long thought himself a hero, but then finds himself removed from his contemporary American southwest surroundings and ending up in an Old West town called Dirt, which is populated by various desert critters garbed like characters out of a spaghetti western. As he's always thought himself a hero, Rango establishes himself as the lawman, strolling the streets as a sheriff-like character. Unknown to him, the "good guy" role does not do very well in Dirt—with a whole cemetery filled with good guy tombstones. But that does not stop Rango from trying, constantly seeking to fit in with his surroundings, no matter how challenging. At a certain point in the narrative, Rango will come to question everything about himself.

He and his wife, Lydia Copperbottom, after 12 hours of "labor", finally manage to construct the baby. His name is Rodney Copperbottom, who becomes a young inventor who dreams of making the world a better place for everyone. Rodney idolizes Bigweld, the master inventor and owner of Bigweld Industries. Rodney has invented a gadget that will help his father clean the dishes at the restaurant. Rodney takes his invention to Robot City to see Bigweld and get a job as an inventor at his company. Instead, Rodney gets to see Ratchet, the new head of the company. Ratchet sees to it that Rodney is removed from the premises. Cappy, a beautiful robot-executive of the company takes an interest in Rodney, and wants to help him. In the slums of Robot City, some old robots known as the Rusties, led by a robot named Fender, befriend Rodney. Ratchet believes the company can make a bigger profit if it stops making spare parts for older robots. Non-working robots are picked up and sent to and melted down by Ratchet's mother, queen of the 'Chop-shop'. Rodney, who remembers Bigweld's 'See a need, fill a need', begins fixing old robots. When Ratchet's mother orders him to stop Rodney, the fireworks begin.
