In flashbacks, with the 10-year-old Big Three, Rebecca takes Randall trick-or-treating, while Jack takes Kate and Kevin to a haunted house. Randall learns about Kyle's death from the neighbors; Rebecca then tells him the facts of his adoption. In other flashbacks, with the Big Three being in their twenties, Kate finds out she is involved with a married man. Kevin, desperate for work as an actor, attempts to steal a role from his roommate and best friend. Meanwhile, Randall and Beth prepare for the arrival of their first daughter. Beth unexpectedly goes into labor after agreeing to help Rebecca get a Facebook account. With no time to get to the hospital, Randall helps Beth through a home delivery. Kate and Kevin commiserate about their deadbeat lives and decide to live together. When Rebecca posts a photo of her granddaughter on Facebook, she gets a message from Miguel, asking how she has been the last 8 years. (Jack's death was sometime before Miguel last saw Rebecca.)

The episode takes place in the lead-up to the triplets' birth. Rebecca has a mental breakdown and forgets that it is Jack's birthday. Miguel tries to encourage Jack to celebrate one more birthday before he becomes a father by taking him golfing. Dr. K struggles to accept the death of his wife, who died over a year earlier, including refusing to dispose of her belongings and declining an offer for dinner at a widow's house. Fireman Joe is struggling with his marriage and he asks a priest for a miracle. William drops Randall off as a newborn at the firehouse. Joe decides to take it first to his wife, who refuses to look after him even though they could not conceive. Joe takes the baby to the hospital and Jack decides to adopt him following the death of one of the triplets. The next day, Dr. K decides to throw away his wife's belongings and eat dinner at his friend's house.

The Pearson children are teenagers by now in the flashback, Kevin and Randall are bickering harder than ever. Kevin moves out of their room and into the basement and wants Randall to stay away. In the present, Kevin and Randall go out to dinner by themselves when Rebecca and Miguel have to cancel. It appears Kevin purposely sat them at a large table with other people so that they wouldn't have to be alone, but he abruptly leaves when he finds out Randall hasn't actually seen The Manny. Kate is working hard on trying to lose weight but is disappointed with the results-meanwhile Toby isn't even trying and is hitting his weight loss goals; he wants to abandon the diet altogether. Beth and William smoke weed together and he accidentally reveals to her that he has known Rebecca since Randall was a baby, which Randall doesn't know. Ironically, Beth moved Kevin's stuff to the basement.

Ted goes out with a woman he met on a blind date that turned sour seven years prior. They decide to reevaluate what happened on the previous date to ensure that their second date will be fine. The rest of the gang returns to the Lusty Leopard strip club and see a dancer who looks like one of them.

Ted gets nervous about his first class, but later learns that the students are from a different course. Robin and Barney resist Marshall and Lily's pressure about discussing the actual status of their relationship.

Dennis Doyle is about to marry Libby, his pregnant fiancee. However, he gets cold feet and runs away during the preparation for the wedding. Five years later, his life has gone in circles ever since.
