When Wilfred discovers an old collar from Ryan's Jack Russell Terrier from twenty years ago, he becomes periodically possessed by the ghost of "Sneakers", Ryan's old dog who he thought he killed when he left the gate to his pool open and Sneakers drowned. Ryan must assist Kristen with hosting a party for her boss, who she is trying to impress to get ahead with a promotion. Wilfred ends up demolishing the party and nearly killing Kristen and another party goer when he pushes them into the pool along with an electrified cart which Ryan unplugs a series of plugs in order to save Kristen's life. After the party, Ryan snaps at Kristen and she breaks down, ultimately revealing that she left the gate open and offers to pay off the rest of the $5,000 that Ryan owes her. They make up and Kristen affectionately apologizes for hating Wilfred, and asks to pet him, until he knocks a glass of red wine all over her robe. After an unexpected event leaves both parties greatly affected, the friendship that Ryan and Wilfred have spent so long developing is in jeopardy of being put to an end when they find themselves unable to face each other. When Ryan becomes increasingly annoyed with Jenna's boyfriend Drew, Wilfred suggests that he and Ryan sabotage Jenna and Drew's relationship. Ryan refuses to interfere with Jenna's relationship with Drew until Wilfred informs him of Drew's competitiveness in sports. Ryan goads Drew into playing a game of ping-pong, which Drew wins before gloating and breaking some of Ryan's personal property, causing Jenna to break up with Drew. Ryan is unable to resist his conscience and decides to mend the relationship between Drew and Jenna. However, Wilfred poisons Ryan. Ryan rushes to the hospital, only to learn that Wilfred had "poisoned" him with chocolate, which is only toxic to dogs. Ryan ignores Wilfred for the rest of the day. Ryan (Elijah Wood) attempts suicide by overdosing on pills and drinking a bottle of NyQuil on the night before he begins a new job his sister Kristen (Dorian Brown), a gynecological nurse, got for him. He fails to even fall asleep though, in part due to his neighbor Spencer's (Ethan Suplee) noisy motorcycle. His other neighbor, Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), drops by the next morning, asking him to watch her dog Wilfred (Jason Gann). Although everyone else sees just a dog, Ryan sees an Australian man in a fursuit who nags the former lawyer all day about his acquiescence to others. Ryan oversleeps after his first encounter with Wilfred, causing Kristen to call and confront him about missing his first day of work. But Ryan ends up hanging out with Wilfred again, who convinces Ryan to confront Spencer after Wilfred causes a confrontation with him. Kristen comes over to confront Ryan about not showing up, and reveals that the pills, which she gave him, were just sugar pills. Ryan steps out to confer with Wilfred, who tricks Ryan into breaking into Spencer's house while Wilfred steals the man's marijuana plants, and defecates in his boots. Upon fleeing home, Kristen puts Ryan on the phone with her boss to beg for his job, but Ryan, inspired by his experience with Wilfred, tells him he would "rather eat possum ass than be [his] desk monkey". Ryan is once again in money troubles, and refuses to ask his sister for help. Wilfred, who is currently bored sexually with his stuffed Bear, decides to help Ryan by getting him into a car accident with a tightly wound single mother (Jane Kaczmarek). The woman is initially angry with Ryan's reckless driving, but it's soon apparent that she is attracted to him. Wilfred pressures Ryan into pursuing a sexual relationship her, mainly because her son has a stuffed giraffe that Wilfred is infatuated with. As the date progresses, it becomes clear that this woman is crazy, so Ryan begs Wilfred for help. Wilfred is having his own sexual problems with "Raffi," and says that he will only help Ryan if he cuckolds him. Ryan proceeds to hump the stuffed giraffe while Wilfred watches, but they are caught by the woman's young son. His horror causes Wilfred and Ryan to flee the house and get the latter's sister to pay off the damage done to the car. Cryptonomicon is a 1999 novel by American author Neal Stephenson. The novel follows the exploits of two groups of people in two different time periods, presented in alternating chapters. The first group is World War II-era Allied codebreakers and tactical-deception operatives affiliated with the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, and disillusioned Axis military and intelligence figures whom they encounter.
