The films follows foul-mouthed, money hungry, recently single teacher Elizabeth Halsey, who is at odds with her colleague Amy. Amy happens to be dating the cute new substitute teacher, Scott, on whom Elizabeth has a crush. When she finds out that his previous girlfriend was very well-endowed, she resolves to raise money to get breast implants in order to attract Scott's attention. She is later told by another colleague that the teacher with the highest class average gets an extra bonus. Her biggest competitor is, of course, Amy

On a bustling shopping day in winter, Jonathan Trager meets Sara Thomas when both try to buy the same pair of gloves at Bloomingdale's department store. Two strangers amid the masses in New York City, their paths collide in the mad holiday rush as they feel a mutual attraction. Despite the fact that each is involved in another relationship, Jonathan and Sara spend the evening traveling Manhattan. But when the night reaches its inevitable end, the two are forced into determining some kind of next step. When the smitten Jonathan suggests an exchange of phone numbers, Sara balks and proposes an idea that will allow fate to take control of their future. Sara asks Jonathan to write his name and phone number on a dollar bill, while she writes her name and number on the inside cover of a used copy of Love in the Time of Cholera. If they are meant to be together, she tells him, they will find their way back into one another's life.

As a welterweight from the wrong side of the tracks, Irish-American Dicky Eklund is the pride of working class Lowell, Massachusetts. Living in his shadow is his half-brother and sparring partner Micky Ward. After fighting Sugar Ray Leonard, Eklund plunges into a nightmare of crack addiction, violence and prison. His family's hopes are crushed in the wake of Dicky's decline. Like a real life Rocky, Micky fights on his own terms and pulls his family out of despair with his meteoric rise in the ring. Freshly paroled Dicky finds redemption training his little brother, now known as "Irish" Micky Ward, for his Welterweight Championship bout with Shea Neary.
