"Behind the Laughter" is the 22nd episode of The Simpsons' 11th season that was originally broadcast in the United States on May 21, 2000. It is presented in a narrative format, with Jim Forbes as narrator. The episode portrays the Simpson family as actors playing themselves on a sitcom, and tells a fictional story of how The Simpsons began.

Everybody hates the Christmas photo card that Joel obsesses over every year. But, when Ben is left out of the card, he gets really hurt that Joel invites Casey instead, so he and Maddie devise a revenge Christmas card. Meanwhile, Mia and Casey are finding it hard to say "no", so they ask Maddie and Ben to do the hard work for their future baby.

Earl and the gang tried to rob a house, but the owners returned. Earl ends up stuck hiding in a kid's bedroom under the bed. When he tried to sneak out the kid mistook him for the boogeyman and has since been afraid of the dark. Earl tries to make up for this mistake, but gets accused of kidnapping the little boy.
