Dirty Work is a 1998 comedy buddy film about long-time friends Mitch and Sam who start a successful revenge-for-hire business in order to earn money for heart surgery for Pops. Lisa tries to fit in with two college students by lying about her age. She finds that the college atmosphere is perfect for her, but her lie is soon discovered and she is shunned by her fellow elementary school students. Meanwhile, Bart is diagnosed with a weakened immune system after getting bitten by a Chinese mosquito and must live in a plastic, germ-free bubble.

The episode switches between Elliot and J.D. spending a sex-filled day in bed and the ensuing weeks, where their new relationship breaks down. The hospital staff reveals their feelings to a psychologist.

Friends Mike, Adam and Ethan are each at different points in their lives in terms of their romantic relationships. Mike is married to Lisa and the two have a young son. Family demands stretch Mike thin in terms of time for himself, and he finds himself getting his "me" time watching movies in his car and thinking Lisa has no idea it's going on, even though she's all too aware. Adam has just moved in with his girlfriend, Callie, and he finds living together is a whole lot different than "she comes over a lot," and they are just starting to figure out how to reconcile their life together with the previous freedom of their single lives. Ethan, who is perpetually single, thinks dating the same woman for three weeks is an extended commitment.

Stewie and Brian form a band aimed at children, but face a breakup when they set their eyes on the same girl. Meanwhile, Chris gets a job as Quagmire's personal assistant for his sex life.

Ted and Marshall argue over who gets the apartment when Marshall and Lily get married. They get in a sword fight, and Marshall accidentally stabs Lily.

The group holds a Norse funeral for Phil by sending his coffin out to sea on a makeshift Viking vessel, which Tandy tries to burn by unsuccessfully shooting torches at it with a bow. Tandy cannot hide that he is unable to find closure after losing Phil even if they were rivals for much of the time they knew each other. He later investigates Phil's possessions and is surprised to learn that Phil did indeed have a middle name: Stacy. He also hopes to help raise Erica's baby, but she tells him that Phil's last request was to keep him away from doing so. Outraged, Tandy builds a fire to burn all of Phil's possessions. Suddenly, Phil's coffin washes up on shore, and Erica catches Tandy grieving beside it. After the two bury the coffin in the sand, Erica helps Tandy find closure. Meanwhile, Tandy reveals to Carol that Todd and Gail have been seeing each other, but he is not aware that Melissa knows, so he warns Carol against telling her. Nevertheless, Melissa attempts to win back Todd, kissing him without Gail's knowledge. When Melissa announces this to Carol, Carol confronts Todd and shames him before kissing him herself.

Leslie continues to strengthen her case to turn Newport land into a National Park with the help of Andy, April and the Pawnee Historical Society. Ron, along with Tom and Donna, tries to get a celebrity on board to help the Gryzzl campaign. As Leslie and Ron come closer to their goals however, their rivalry comes to an all-time high. After the press conference, it culminates in Leslie and Ron screaming at the top of their lungs, forcing the others to intervene. Meanwhile, Ben and Terry try to get documents signed, which turns into a hassle after it continues to get invalidated over and over.
