After several unsuccessful attempts at getting a girlfriend, Moe finally gets one after walking away from a disco with Homer. The woman, Renee, surprisingly finds Moe attractive, resulting in Moe treating her lavishly. After spending too much, Moe's credit card maxes out, causing him to become desperate for money. He soon devises a plan to have Homer steal his car and crash it to accomplish insurance fraud. Unfortunately, Homer gets caught and ends up in jail. With the insurance money, Moe decides not to bail Homer out of jail, but instead take a Hawaiian vacation with Renee. After finding out, Homer escapes and decides to find Moe for revenge. Meanwhile, Moe confesses the truth to Renee, who is happy at first, but is disgusted with him after his plans to free Homer involve lying again. Renee leaves Moe, then he accidentally starts a fire at his tavern. At the same time, Homer comes to fight Moe, but both faint due to the smoke. Finally, Barney comes and saves the two, and Homer allows Moe to temporarily run his bar at the Simpsons' house.

Ben is mad when Andy and April decide to throw a Halloween party at their house without asking him. Tom emcees an event for Leslie's campaign but manages to also promote his company. Meanwhile, Ron and Ann give Andy and April an unusual wedding present.

Carla is forced to do Kelso's job saying "no" to people's requests. J.D.'s patient who needs a liver transplant recovers but his brother who donated gets worse. Dr. Cox is forced to attend a couples' dinner with Elliot and Keith, with the result that the other interns try to befriend him as well (much to J.D.'s dismay). J.D. himself gets in the way of "Turk Time", causing resentment from his best friend.

Evelyn is upset after discovering that Jake spent a weekend with Judith's parents, and insists that she get the same grandmother benefits as his other grandparent's get to enjoy. Alan convinces Jake to stay at her house, and then goes out with Charlie, meeting a bar full of hot volleyball women. Meanwhile, Jake is causing Evelyn much distress, as he is a less than perfect house guest.

Coach Roy McCormick was once college basketball's top mastermind. His attention began to turn on what endorsement contracts he could secure instead of actually coaching his team. Also, Coach McCormick has a quick temper. He lets his temper get the best of him in most situations, and after accidentally killing an opposing teams mascot during a game, he is banned from coaching college basketball (again) until he can show that he can control his anger. Roy waits for a coaching position, yet nobody calls. Eventually he receives only one offer: the Mount Vernon Junior High School, coach Roy's former basketball team is looking for somebody to coach their basketball team, the Smelters. Roy reluctantly accepts the offer, hoping that a few weeks at the school will prove his good intentions and restore him to his high-living ways as a celebrated college coach. As Roy begins coaching the squad, he gets into a situation that he has never been in before and doesn't know what happened to him. He eventually starts teaching the concepts of basketball to his new team. With the teaching and learning done between the two, the Smelters eventually start having success. The success leads Coach McCormick to find what he has been missing all this time, not a big coaching gig, not a high-dollar endorsement, but his simple love of the game.
