New Orleans is a 1947 musical drama featuring Billie Holiday as a singing maid and Louis Armstrong as a bandleader; supporting players Holiday and Armstrong perform together and portray a couple becoming romantically involved. During one song, Armstrong's character introduces the members of his band, a virtual Who's Who of classic jazz greats, including trombonist Kid Ory, drummer Zutty Singleton, clarinetist Barney Bigard, guitar player Bud Scott, bassist George "Red" Callender, pianist Charlie Beal, and pianist Meade Lux Lewis. Also performing in the film is cornetist Mutt Carey and bandleader Woody Herman. The music, however, takes a back seat to a rather conventional plot.

While attempting to clear the kitchen of unnecessary clutter, Carrie discovers an old, unopened wedding gift in a cupboard. It's a gravy boat from Doug's cousin Ron and his wife Marcia. Inside the gravy boat is a check for $1500 from the couple that they never knew about. They set their sights on using the money to take a vacation to New Orleans, but when Doug's cousins find out about it, insist that they take them along for the trip. Doug and Carrie can't imagine anything worse, so they attempt to sneak off on their trip without letting the cousins know about it.
