At Popisms.com, we show you how pop culture (TV, movies, books, ads) is connected to other pop culture. For example, what song is in that Olympics commercial or TV episode? What book is that character reading? What music is another song sampling? We answer these questions and many more.

Plot / Description

What makes you cry? Is it alright for men to cry?

We asked a group of guys what it takes to be a man in 2017. Check out what they said in our Men In Progress series.

"LYNX | Men In Progress | Boys Don't Cry"

Voiceover / Dialog / Script / Spoken Word

I cry every time I see 'Forrest Gump'.
When my sister, unfortunately passed away about 17 years ago. I sometimes think about it again, and you know, shed a tear.
I still don't like showing emotion to other people. That'ts my weakness.
I've got some pals that tell me they went to the cinema and started crying, and I'm like, 'Come on, like, you've got to sort that out.'
I think it's alright for men to cry.
Yeah, I don't mind when it happens. Well I do, because I'm upset, but you know.
It just all depends on the person and how they've been brought up and how they perceive it as. I perceive it as, Listen, you know what? Cry. Let it out. You feel much better for it and then you can go on.
Did you ever see your father cry?
Yes. I didn't think that would happen.
I'm sorry about that.
No, it's alright. That's what we're here for, right? Yeah, my sister. And it's just, you know, these things happen, but when it does happen to you or your close family, it's, yeah. It just hits you, you know? I don't see my dad cry a lot, but when he does, I know it hurts.
As much as my dad's a real, you know, I would consider him a tough bloke, you know? He wasn't afraid to show his emotions with you, you know? If he was upset about something, he'd let you know why he was upset. So, at no point my dad ever hid his emotions from us, you know? And I think that's why I kind of feel that as a man, you don't have to.
Sometimes life is not always what you want it to be, but you shed a tear and then you put things in perspective.
I think everyone feels better for having a good cry, don't you? Getting it all out.
There shouldn't even be a conversation about a man who cries. People cry. They have feelings.
It's how you get out your emotion, and it's a "phew!".
You know, it's probably a bit like the feeling when you really really really have to pee, and at some point you just say 'fuck it' and you let it go and it feels amazing.
