Basketball Jones featuring Tyrone Shoelaces
performed by
Cheech and Chong
Date:
September 1973
This Song is played in
A Midsummer's Nice Dream part of The Simpsons Season 22
Cheech tells Homer that he's doing a good job, and deserves a reward. Homer imagines what his reward from Cheech will be, as the song 'Basketball Jones' plays, and a parody of the animated short film 'Basketball Jones' is shown, with Homer taking the role of one of the characters.
"Basketball Jones featuring Tyrone Shoelaces" is a song by Cheech and Chong that first appeared on the 1973 album Los Cochinos. Sung in falsetto by Cheech Marin, playing the title character Tyrone (as in "tie-your-own") Shoelaces, it told the story of Shoelaces' love of basketball. It was a parody of the song "Love Jones" by Brighter Side of Darkness. In the album version, the song was preceded by a mock interview with Jones' basketball coach named "Umgwana Kickbooti" (or something like that), in a parody of a Wide World of Sports interview conducted by a character named "Red Blazer". "Jones", both in the original song and this parody, is slang for "craving" or "addiction".

After discovering that 'Cheech & Chong' are coming to Springfield for a reunion tour, Bart asks, "Who the hell are Cheech & Chong?". Homer gasps, saying, "Bart! Cheech & Chong are the 'Beavis and Butt-head' of their day!". Homer is disappointed when Bart then asks, "Who the hell are 'Beavis and Butt-head'?". Homer cries because he swore that his children would appreciate stoner comedy.
The show centers on a pair of teenagers, Beavis and Butt-head, who live in the fictional town of Highland. They while away their time in sarcastic conversation, fantasizing about sex and masculinity, although they have no real-world experience with either thing. They attend Highland High (based on a real high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Judge grew up) and occasionally work at part-time jobs, putting as little effort as possible into everything they do. They survive their misadventures without serious consequences, and with a generally contented, though critical (not apathetic) worldview. During each episode, Beavis and Butt-head watch and make fun of two or three music videos.

This Television Series is referred to by
A Midsummer's Nice Dream part of The Simpsons Season 22
During Kent Brockman's 'That's Kent-ertainment!' news segment, he tells about the Cheech & Chong reunion tour. Kent gives a brief history of how the pair became famous, saying "The duo's herbal ha-ha has led to a series of successful albums, concerts, movies and 'Nash Bridges'.".
The show is about an Inspector (later Captain) with the San Francisco Police Department's elite "Special Investigations Unit". As the show begins, he's in his 40s, twice-divorced, and dealing with a feisty teenage daughter, Cassidy. Nash convinces recently-retired Inspector Joe Dominguez to return to the force to partner with him. Nash and Joe cruise the streets of San Francisco in Nash's electric yellow 1971 Plymouth Barracuda convertible, a gift from Nash's brother Bobby just before Bobby left for the Vietnam War. Bobby Bridges was reported as MIA, but turns up in later seasons. Nash's father Nick suffers from mild dementia and has a habit of getting kicked out of nursing homes. He eventually moves in with Nash, and is often involved in comic subplots.

Kent Brockman's segment 'It's Kent-ertainment!' features a story about Cheech & Chong's reunion tour, that is coming to Springfield. A picture of Cheech & Chong's album, 'Cheech & Chong's Greatest Hit' is shown in the corner of the screen as Kent gives the story of their reunion tour.
Cheech & Chong's Greatest Hit is a comedy album by Cheech & Chong. The album is a "greatest hits" compilation, featuring some of their best known comedy bits. Much to some fans disliking, some tracks were edited for this release. Oddly, the 1:34 track "Dave" is broken into two separate tracks, and is edited down for time. Also, "Earache My Eye" fades out just before the argument between father and son.
