Love Actually
Date:
November 6, 2003
This Movie is referred to by
Where Were We? part of How I Met Your Mother Season 2
Everyone is giving Marshall advice on how he should get over his break up with Lily. Barney says to Robin, "What's your idea? Eat ice cream and watch 'Love Actually' till your periods sync up?".
The film begins with a voiceover from David, commenting that, whenever he gets gloomy with the state of the world, he thinks about the arrivals terminal at Heathrow Airport, and the pure, uncomplicated love felt as friends and families welcome their arriving loved ones. David's voiceover also relates that all the known messages left by the people who died on the 9/11 planes were messages of love and not hate. The film then tells the "love" story of many people, culminating in a final scene at the airport enacted to the tune of The Beach Boys' "God Only Knows", that closes their stories. The film ends with a montage of anonymous persons greeting their arriving loved ones that slowly enlarges and fills the screen, eventually forming the shape of a heart.

Barney's speech about how he, Marshall, and Ted are going to womanize together is a callback to Tom Joad's speech at the end of The Grapes of Wrath.
Set during the Great Depression, the novel focuses on a poor family of sharecroppers, the Joads, driven from their home by drought, economic hardship, and changes in the agriculture industry. In a nearly hopeless situation, they set out for California's Central Valley along with thousands of other "Okies" in search of land, jobs, and dignity.
