Phyllis and Bess moved in with Lars' mother Audrey Dexter (Jane Rose) and stepfather Judge Jonathan Dexter (Henry Jones), and Phyllis took a job as an assistant in a photographic studio. The owner, Julie Erskine, was played by Barbara Colby, who had appeared in a recurring role as a different character on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Colby was murdered after three episodes of Phyllis had been filmed, and the part was assumed by Liz Torres. Much of the first season's humor stemmed from Phyllis' attempts to fit into the job market, after having lived most of her life as the spoiled wife of a rich physician. During the second and final season, Phyllis would switch jobs and work as an administrative assistant for San Francisco City Supervisor Dan Valenti (Carmine Caridi). Elderly actress Judith Lowry also appeared as Mother Dexter, Jonathan's mother and Phyllis' main nemesis. Accordingly, she was better than everyone when it came to putting Phyllis in her place. In a 1976 episode, Mother Dexter married the similarly aged Arthur Lanson (Burt Mustin); both Lowry and Mustin died within a month of the episode's airing. Bess also found romance with Mark Valenti (Craig Wasson), the nephew of Phyllis' boss, whom she later married. In the final episode, Bess announced that she was pregnant with their first child.

The series opened with a slimmed-down Rhoda Morgenstern traveling home to New York City from Minneapolis. While in New York, she met Joe Gerard (David Groh), a handsome divorce; with a young son who ran a wrecking company. Rhoda decided to stay in New York, initially moving in with her younger sister, Brenda (Julie Kavner). Brenda, an overweight bank-teller, had self-esteem problems, similar to Rhoda herself at the outset of The Mary Tyler Moore Show four years earlier. Brenda's small apartment couldn't hold the both of them, so Rhoda tried moving in with her parents Ida (Nancy Walker) and Martin (Harold Gould) at their apartment in The Bronx. Ida and Martin were the archetypical Jewish parents. Ida was overbearing, overprotective, benevolently manipulative, and desperate to make sure Rhoda found a good husband. Martin was her dutiful, more mild-mannered dad. At first, Ida went to great lengths to baby her daughter. But when it became apparent that Rhoda was sliding into a rut by staying in the room where she grew up, Ida forced Rhoda to move out for her own good. Meanwhile, Rhoda's relationship with Joe blossomed. Joe invited Rhoda to move in with him so they could live together. Rhoda accepted the offer, although once she moved in, she quickly realized she wanted to be married. After initial hesitation, Joe came around to the idea and a wedding date was set.

The Chance family becomes obsessed with cleanliness and moves Maw Maw to the greenhouse; old home movies reveal what has been keeping the family healthy.

With the gym closed for repairs, Christine decides to be Matthew's secretary after his quits. Turns out she's a great secretary, except she starts convincing his patients they are okay and don't need to come in. They end up having a huge fight, and she turns to Matthew's suite-mate and mentor, Max Kershaw, for support. She thinks she's dating Max, but he thinks she's coming for therapy and they never quite get their signals straight. Richard and New Christine, now living together platonically, end up having sex. Unfortunately Richard thinks they're back together and to New Christine, it was just sex. Richard decides he has to move out.

Homer becomes a food critic for a Springfield newspaper and ends up annoying the restaurant owners of Springfield after he makes negative reviews just to be mean, advice he took from fellow critics. Springfield's restaurant owners then attempt to kill Homer by feeding him a poisoned eclair.

Tommy tries to bring order to the chaos of his life, and pulls dangerous stunts on the job. Also, Lou tells his wife that he cheated on her.

Ritchie goes to church with Richard and new Christine without consulting his mother first, leaving old Christine to explain and explore her aversion to organized religion. Meanwhile, Barb considers being a fireman.

Hannah's parents cut her off and she loses her internship. Jessa returns to town and moves in with her cousin, Shoshanna. Hannah and Marnie throw Jessa a dinner party that ends with Hannah drinking opium tea and showing up at her parents' hotel room high.

After taking some new sleeping pills, Christine wakes up to discover she made several embarrassing phone calls while knocked out.

Peter wins a tour of a magical brewery owned by Pawtucket Pat (a la Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), while Lois desperately searches for a talented piano player to beat her rival at an upcoming talent competition, finding one in the form of her husband, who can only play professionally when he's drunk.
