Fiona, having dumped Steve, decides to date Tony, a local cop who has had feelings for her since childhood. A woman from the Office of the Inspector General knocks on the Gallagher door looking for Aunt Ginger, the owner of the family house, who has supposedly been living in a Wisconsin nursing home for 12 years.

In a flashback, Mike arrives to Albuquerque on a train and is met by his daughter-in-law, Stacey. Their conversation reveals that Mike's son, Matty, who was also a cop, was recently murdered. Mike finds a crooked veterinarian to treat his bullet wound; the veterinarian offers Mike a job, but he declines. In 2002, Mike is taken to the police station and demands Jimmy as his lawyer. He asks Jimmy to spill coffee on one of the detectives so that Mike can steal his notebook; Jimmy refuses at first, but ends up doing it. Reading through the notebook, Mike realizes that Stacey had called the detectives. He confronts her and reveals that Matty was the only "clean" cop in the precinct. In another flashback, Mike breaks into a police cruiser parked outside a bar before entering, then after drinking heavily, he tells two detectives, Hoffman and Fenski, he knows it was them. Stumbling, Mike announces his move to Albuquerque and leaves the bar. The two detectives pick him up in their cruiser, where Mike explains that they killed Matty because they were scared of what he might do. They plan to murder him in an empty parking lot using his own gun, but Mike, having feigned his drunken state and hidden a second gun in the back seat, kills them both. In 2002, Mike tearfully explains to Stacey that he was the one who "broke" Matty by convincing him to take the bribe, but his partners still saw the hesitation in his eyes and killed him anyway.

Michael falls for a British woman named Rita while investigating a claim by George Sr. in which he says a British construction firm tricked him into doing business with the Iraqis.

The staff is being interviewed by Rebecca Halliday and recount how they all failed to discover the Genoa story was false. Flash back to a few months ago: the third Red Team meeting is being conducted and Will is presented the story. Will reveals that he heard the same story from a source. Charlie says that the story is ready to air. ACN airs the story on September 9, 2012. The next day, revelations from various sources cause the staff to start questioning the story's accuracy. Mac is suspicious and reviews the tape of the interview with the General. She discovers that Jerry edited it and fires him. It is revealed that in addition to the edited interview, Cyrus West (the first source) has political ambitions and exaggerated Operation Genoa, Eric Sweeney (the second source) is discovered to have a traumatic brain injury, Charlie's source provided him with a fake manifest in order to get back at him for firing his son, who is dead; the Lance Corporal, who was interviewed by Mac, was asked leading questions and merely repeated what he heard from Mac and other sources in the interview. Meanwhile, riots are beginning in Cairo because of an American film insulting Islam and a terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi occurs. Will, Charlie, and Mac are all prepared to hand in their resignations to AWM CEO, Leona Lansing, but she rejects them. Takes place between September 9 and September 11, 2012

Ron and Diane go to a woodworking award show to recognize one of Ron's pieces, when Tammy II shows up. Jerry and his wife throw a holiday party and some of Jerry's friends are surprised they were not invited.

Christine is thrilled when Britney B, the most popular girl in school, asks Ritchie to the 7th grade dance. She thinks they've become popular and isn't shy about lording it over the meanie moms. But when Christine learns that she wants to break up with him at the dance, she pays Britney $100 to stay with him, a process that quickly diminishes her popularity. Also, Richard and Matthew must convince a woman to leave her apartment in order for them to move into it, and eventually do so by moving her into Christine's place.
