Pizza delivery boy Philip J. Fry accidentally stumbles into a cryogenic freezer on December 31, 1999, and awakens one thousand years in the future on New Year's Eve, 2999. He meets a one-eyed career counselor named Leela, who tries to assign him an eternal career as a delivery boy. Fry dislikes the idea and escapes into the city where he meets Bender, an alcoholic robot who has also abandoned his job, and the two become friends. Fry soon becomes depressed that he can never return to his old life and surrenders to Leela, but she instead decides that she also hates her job and quits. Now fugitives, the three visit Fry's descendant, Professor Farnsworth, who helps them escape from the police on his intergalactic spaceship as the world celebrates the year 3000. Farnsworth hires the three to become his crew for his intergalactic delivery service, Planet Express, with Fry becoming a delivery boy.

While returning home from getting bubblegum ice cream, 23-year-old Jimmy Chance saves Lucy from her boyfriend, and has a one-night-stand with her. The next morning Jimmy and his parents, Virginia and Burt discover from a news report that Jimmy's one night stand is actually a serial killer who murdered her boyfriends, and in response Virginia knocks her out with a television. Eight months later, Jimmy finds out that she is pregnant with his child, and after she is sentenced to death, Jimmy takes the baby and wants to raise her himself. Burt and Virginia initially try to convince Jimmy to give the baby up, but eventually they help out, renaming the baby from "Princess Beyonce" to Hope.

There's also her family, her ex-husband Bobby and her son Travis, who will test her patience, and her new fortysomething divorced neighbor Gray, who doesn't believe that Jules can date again.

A documentary crew films the activities of the workers in a nursing home. Derek, a 49 year old worker who loves his job and the people he cares for, introduces the crew to some of the workers and residents. Hannah, who runs the nursing home, is interviewed on how she got to where she is, and her relationship history. Derek and Hannah walk around outside in a grassy field and around a pond. Derek, thinking he sees a spider, gets scared and falls into the pond. Hannah attempts to get Derek to find out discreetly if Tom (in whom she is interested, and who is a relation of a resident) is gay, but the plan backfires. Hannah takes Derek to the pub, where three nearby women make fun of Derek's looks. Hannah and Derek leave, but not before Hannah headbutts one of the women. Later in the day, one of the residents dies, which greatly upsets Derek. After a memorial service, Hannah and Tom leave for a pub.

Elena Gilbert and her brother Jeremy can't come to grips with the fact their parents have died. But nothing goes as planned for both of them when mysterious new student Stefan Salvatore attracts Elena's attention, leaving her ex-boyfriend Matt and her rival Caroline unaware of what's happening. After Matt's sister Vicki is bitten by something they believe to be an animal, it's discovered that Stefan is a vampire. Walter knows they intend to kill him so he poisons them while showing them his recipe.

But another touch will kill them again, for good, and if he keeps them alive for more than a minute, someone else in close proximity dies. He decides to use this ability of his to solve crimes, but it grows complicated when he gives life to his childhood crush, Charlotte "Chuck" Charles, and decides to let her keep living.

Although each sibling and family has its own share of life to grapple with, perhaps this reunion is the push they need to help each other pick up the pieces and focus on the everyday challenges that families face while raising children and starting over.
