In 1995, Cohle and Hart continue to investigate the murder of Dora Lange, and learn she was attending church prior to her disappearance. Cohle deduces that Hart is cheating on his wife, Maggie (Michelle Monaghan), with court reporter Lisa Tragnetti (Alexandra Daddario), creating friction between the two. Cohle is also experiencing hallucinatory synesthetic side effects to his drug consumption and is contemptuous of Reverend Billy Lee Tuttle's (Jay O. Sanders) lobbying for a special task force focusing on "anti-Christian crimes" to assist in the investigation. While buying drugs from a young prostitute, Cohle is pointed towards a remote "ranch" harboring runaway girls as prostitutes. They find Lange's diary and learn the location of the church, which was destroyed in a fire, and that she came under the influence of a man she called the "Yellow King" in a place called "Carcosa." While searching through the wreckage of the church, they find a nightmarish image of a woman with deer antlers painted on a wall. In 2012, Papania and Gilbough continue their interviews of Cohle and Hart. Hart is divorced, and Cohle confides that his daughter died after being involved in a car accident, leading to the collapse of his marriage and the beginning of his addiction. To avoid prosecution for killing a meth user who had injected his own infant child with the drug, Cohle's superiors compelled him to be a "floating" drug undercover officer for four years, until he was hospitalized in a psychiatric institution after shooting three cartel members and being wounded in the gunfight. After his release, Cohle's request for another job resulted in his becoming a homicide detective with CID, where he was partnered with Hart.

Tommy fights Joe Lee and manages to kill him, but accidentally kills Melinda as well. Sam helps Tommy dispose of their bodies in a swamp. Eric dreams that his maker, Godric, forces him to drink Sookie's blood, but Eric vows not to hurt Sookie. Bill glamours Portia into making her afraid of him, in order to put an end to her romantic advances. Naomi discovers Tara's real name and confronts her over the phone. Tara discovers that Eric is staying with Sookie and reels off a list of Eric's crimes against Sookie before running away. Eric leaves, guilt-ridden, but Sookie calls him back and the two kiss. Before the full moon, Jason has erotic dreams about Jessica, in which Hoyt also appears. Arlene and Terry have Reverend Daniels cleanse their house of ghosts, but paranormal activity still lingers. Alcide is visited by Marcus Bozeman, the head of the local pack, who scolds him for not having registered with them. Lafayette and Jesus visit Jesus' witchcraft-practicing grandfather to combat the threat posed by Pam and Eric. Sookie's dead grandmother's spirit warns her that Marnie is dangerous. Marnie is later arrested by Bill, who glamours her to find out if her powers are genuine. Bill meets with the four sheriffs of Louisiana and they discuss the persecution of witches by vampires in Spain in the 1600s. Pam accidentally tells them that Eric has lost his memory, and that he is staying with Sookie.

Jack begins to bond with Milton and seeks a way to help him get the kidney he needs. Meanwhile, people start seeking Liz out as a relationship expert as a result of the "That's a Dealbreaker" sketches, and Kenneth helps Tracy deal with his embarrassment over not finishing high school.

The stevedores gather for work as a floating corpse is pulled from the water. Once ashore, they all recognize the body as Frank Sobotka. The Greek opts to stop pursuing Nick because the police are on his heels, and walks away from Baltimore. The FBI visits the union hall and tells them that they need to change their leadership or face de-certification. The union remains loyal and seals the destruction of their future. Urban reform begins to hit Baltimore as the docks undergo construction. Omar vows revenge against Stringer. Stringer cements his deal with Proposition Joe now that Mouzone is out of the way. Bubbles is arrested and alerts Greggs and McNulty to the relationship between Proposition Joe and Stringer Bell in exchange for his release.

Distant Thunder is a 1988 American drama film directed by Rick Rosenthal and starring John Lithgow and Ralph Macchio.
