On January 9, 2015, producers Scott Sanders, Roy Furman, and Oprah Winfrey announced that the Menier Chocolate Factory production would be mounted on Broadway. Jennifer Hudson makes her Broadway debut in the role of Shug, Danielle Brooks plays the role of Sofia, and Cynthia Erivo reprises her role as Celie. Kyle Jean-Baptiste was slated to be in it as well, but he died in August 2015. Previews began November 10, 2015, with the official opening December 10 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Erivo won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, with the production taking home the 2016 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The production closed on January 8, 2017.

Waitress is a musical with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, and a book by Jessie Nelson. Based on the 2007 film of the same name, written by Adrienne Shelly, the musical tells the story of Jenna Hunterson, a waitress in an unhappy marriage to her husband Earl. When Jenna unexpectedly becomes pregnant she begins an affair with her gynecologist Dr. Jim Pomatter. Looking for ways out she sees a pie contest and its grand prize as her chance.

The titular character, Evan Hansen, is a high school senior who suffers from social anxiety disorder, which inhibits his ability to connect with other people and make friends. After the death of one of his classmates, he fabricates a lie that inadvertently brings him closer to the classmate's family, while also allowing him to gain his own sense of purpose.

Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung- and rapped-through musical about the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton , with music, lyrics, and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda , inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Chernow . Incorporating hip hop , R&B , pop , soul , traditional-style show tunes , and color-conscious casting of non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures, the musical achieved both critical acclaim and box office success.

Bright Star is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945-46 with flashbacks to 1923.

King Kong, is a musical with music by Marius de Vries, lyrics by Michael Mitnick and Craig Lucas, a book by Lucas and additional musical and lyrical contributions by 3D, Sarah McLachlan, Guy Garvey, Justice and The Avalanches. It is based on the 1933 film of the same name and is produced by Global Creatures, whose animatronics workshop Global Creature Technology designed the six-metre animatronic silverback title character.[1] Under the direction of Daniel Kramer, the musical is choreographed by John O'Connell.

Come from Away is a musical with book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. It is set in the week following the September 11 attacks and tells the true story of what transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon. The characters in the musical are based on (and in most cases share the names of) real Gander residents as well as some of the 7,000 stranded travelers they housed and fed.

Kinky Boots tells of a struggling British shoe factory's young, straitlaced owner, Charlie, who forms an unlikely partnership with Lola, a drag queen, to save the business. Charlie develops a plan to produce custom transvestite footwear for drag artists, rather than the men's dress shoes that his firm is known for, and in the process, he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.

The musical's narrative centers on Matilda, a precocious 5-year-old girl who loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life.

9 to 5: The Musical is an upcoming musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and a book by Patricia Resnick, based on the 1980 movie Nine to Five. Resnick was the co-screenwriter of the film, with co-writer Colin Higgins (the film's director) in which Parton had her first film role. The musical premiered at Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in try-outs in September 2008 and is scheduled to open on Broadway in April 2009.

The Toxic Avenger is a rock musical that is based on Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman's 1984 film of the same name. The book of the musical was written by Joe DiPietro, its music by David Bryan, and both wrote the lyrics.

The Little Mermaid is a stage musical produced by Disney Theatrical, based on the animated 1989 Disney film of the same name and the classic story of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. The musical's book is by Doug Wright, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman (written for the film) and new lyrics by Glenn Slater. The musical had a pre-Broadway tryout in Denver, Colorado in September 2007, with Broadway previews beginning in November 2007 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, previously the home of Disney Theatrical's Beauty and the Beast, which closed in July 2007 to make way for the new production. The Little Mermaid opened on January 10, 2008.

Tarzan is a stage musical based on the Disney film of the same name and the story by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The music is composed by Phil Collins, and the book by David Henry Hwang. Designed and directed by Bob Crowley, the production was choreographed by Meryl Tankard with Aerial Movement by Pinchon Baldinu, with lighting design by Natasha Katz and sound design by John Shivers. The musical opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway on May 10, 2006, making it the only Disney Theatrical production without an out-of-town tryout. Danton Burroughs, grandson of Edgar Rice Burroughs, attended the opening night gala. This production was nominated for a Tony award for Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Natasha Katz). Due to poor reviews and ticket sales, the show closed on July 8, 2007 after 35 previews and 486 performances

The Color Purple is a Broadway musical based upon the novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. It features music and lyrics written by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, with a book by Marsha Norman. It ran on Broadway in 2005 and has been touring throughout the US. The Broadway production earned eleven 2006 Tony Awards nominations.
