The film had its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany in February 2006. In contrast to the book setting in Paris, the film was shot entirely and is mainly situated in various places in Germany. Cities and states in Germany used for filming included Thuringia and Berlin. Contrary to the book, the film does not have cultural pessimism as a main theme, and it has an alternative ending.

He fails to even fall asleep though, in part due to his neighbor Spencer's (Ethan Suplee) noisy motorcycle. His other neighbor, Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), drops by the next morning, asking him to watch her dog Wilfred (Jason Gann). Although everyone else sees just a dog, Ryan sees an Australian man in a fursuit who nags the former lawyer all day about his acquiescence to others. Ryan oversleeps after his first encounter with Wilfred, causing Kristen to call and confront him about missing his first day of work. But Ryan ends up hanging out with Wilfred again, who convinces Ryan to confront Spencer after Wilfred causes a confrontation with him. Kristen comes over to confront Ryan about not showing up, and reveals that the pills, which she gave him, were just sugar pills. Ryan steps out to confer with Wilfred, who tricks Ryan into breaking into Spencer's house while Wilfred steals the man's marijuana plants, and defecates in his boots. Upon fleeing home, Kristen puts Ryan on the phone with her boss to beg for his job, but Ryan, inspired by his experience with Wilfred, tells him he would "rather eat possum ass than be [his] desk monkey". When Rochelle is called to school to discuss Tonya's inappropriate behavior, it quickly becomes obvious to Rochelle that it's a case of the apple not falling far from the tree.

Doug tries to sneak a sandwich upstairs to eat in bed, even though Carrie has asked him not to eat in bed. When she discovers that he's eating, she complains that he has gotten poppy seeds all over the sheets. It turns out that the black specks aren't poppy seeds, but they're bed bugs. Carrie and Doug call an exterminator to get rid of the bugs, but when he quotes a price higher than they are willing to pay, Doug promises to take care of them himself with a bug bomb. When that doesn't work, they end up calling back the creepy exterminator, who kicks them out of the house for the night while he takes care of the problem. Carrie and Doug are stuck, roaming the city all night trying to kill time till morning when they can return home. Meanwhile, Spence and Danny have a vacation coming up but they can't agree on where to go. Danny wants to go to Vegas, Spence wants to go to the Aztec Ruins. To settle their argument, they have a wrestling match.

But after becoming so thoroughly entangled in Scott's personal life that he drives Randy away, Earl realizes that he may be the one with the obsession.

All they need is the help of Deacon and Kelly to corroborate their story. At the last minute, Deacon and Kelly have to cancel their plans because one of their kids is sick. Doug and Carrie end up driving all the way to Maryland in a rush to make sure their presence is noticed by the bride and groom, so they can get credit for their attendance. Meanwhile, Arthur convinces Spence to play along as his son in order to get a deal on buying a new pair of shoes.

Zapp Brannigan and his subordinate Kif are court-martialed and dishonorably discharged after destroying the new DOOP headquarters. Unemployed, Zapp and Kif take up jobs at Planet Express. During a mission, Zapp plays upon Leela's harsh treatment of Fry and Bender and convinces the two to stage a mutiny so that he may attack a neutral planet, hoping it will get him reinstated in the DOOP. Fry and Bender discover the plan is a suicide mission, so they free Leela and foil Zapp's plan. Zapp later tries to take credit for the Planet Express crew's heroics, and he and Kif are reinstated in the DOOP after Leela supports his testimony to keep Zapp away from her.
