"Braylon O'Neill: Making Strides" Five year old Braylon O'Neill was born missing the tibia and fibula bones in both of his legs. Now, he's making strides, pushing limits, and playing sports because of Microsoft technology. December 22, 2008 Braylon was born. He entered the world with his arms up, and we all shouted "touchdown", and I really think in that moment a strong spirit entered the world. It was also that moment we discovered that he was missing the tibia and fibula bones in both of his legs. You know ever parent can't wait to see, you know, what their child is going to be like. For us it was a little bit different because he was born with a physical difference. As shocking as that was, it was a sense of peace when we looked at him we knew that is going to be able to do this. so when Bray was 11 months old he was fitted for his first pair of prosthesis. The prosthetics allow him to engage and play in ways very similar to that of his friends. I think I have a kid who is extremely determined. If he has a challenge, he finds a way to conquer that. I think he's taught myself and my husband a lot about that. But I think he's a kid who thinks he can do whatever he wants to do, and who loves so many parts of life. (Lyrics) Time to have some fun When I first met Braylon he was one year old. Once we found out who he really was, we found out that it didn't matter what we did, he was gonna make it work. Our objective is to keep him with the most modern technology, and to help him strive forward with his prosthesis. We's use Microsoft technology to analyze Braydon's gate mechanics. We're able to slow down his movements and watch them or track where his joins are in space to make any suggestions we may have for his prosthetic alignment or where he may need more strength. We were introduced to Travis when we were in San Diego. We brought him out to our triathalon event called the San Diego Triathalon Challenge. At that event Bray participated in his first kid's race, and he got a medal. Braylon put's himself out there with no regard to his legs at all. That's not the most important thing to him. It's living his life, and you can tell. I honestly can't imagine a world in which this technology does not exist for my child. He wouldn't be able to have all the opportunities that he does have. I think the technology has changed Braylon's life by opening up the world for him, and really making it the limitless world which is what every parent aspires for their child. "Sarah Churman: Hearing for the first time" Sarah Churman went 29 years of her life wearing hearing aids. She received an Esteem Hearing implant and was able to hear her children laugh for the first time, all with the help of Microsoft technology. I went my whole life wearing hearing aids. I had 85 bilateral decibel loss, and without my hearing aid in, it would take a chainsaw running at full throttle right next to me to be able to register some sound. There was never a time that I didn't desire to want to hear. Back in 2011 I got a thing called the Esteem hearing implant. It's beeping. So your device is on. Can you hear me talking? The first time I heard my kid's voices was the morning after I got the first implant activated. One table. Two people. They were in here on the kitchen floor with their little table having a tea party so I came into the kitchen and I was crying. I thought they were wound up, and he said, "No, this is them on a daily basis." They were the main push for wanting to have the device. It was tough when she first got it turned on. For probably a month I moped around because I wasn't needed any more, and I had all these things I attended to for her. It's given me self confidence. It's allowed me to do things without constantly relying on someone. It's made me a better mom, and a better wife, and a better friend. If I could just scream from the rooftops about technology and how it could revolutionize your life like it's done mine. I just want everyone to benefit. Microsoft technologies involved intraoperatively, and we do measurements with a computerized device and a laser that picks up vibrations of the hearing mechanism. In the OR, all our interface devices are windows-based systems. Microsoft provided a single platform that we could use for a full breadth of our business. That single platform had all of the tools that we needed to execute the development and even our ongoing business today. "Windows 8: Artist" This commercial shows a bored little girl. Her mother grabs the touchscreen monitor from her new Windows 8 computer and puts it on the little girl's artist easel. The girl then "paints" pictures on the touch device like it's a painting canvas. She picks a photo from the image library, and then tries to copy it in her painting app. She finishes off the face with a big red smile, and her mom prints the picture and pins it to the wall. Next she paints a rainbow, a falling star, the Earth, and a flower all while wearing costumes such as a Viking helmet, an owl hat, and a flower headband. While she's painting, the phone rings, and she answers it to talk to her dad right on the computer through Skype. She shows her dad her new pictures through the webcam (including one of him that she holds up-side-down). At the end, she spins around while holding the picture of her father. May the Birds Be With You This Windows 8 commercial with a Star Wars theme begins with someone using the picture password on a girl holding up cinnimon rolls to her hair to make her look like Princess Leia. This commercial for the upcoming release of Microsoft Windows 8 operating system begins with a NASA-like countdown. They start at 10, and only get down to 8 which they repeat several times. As they say "eight" over and over, old things blow up (like old laptops) and are replaced by newer technology like a tablet that can be plugged into a keyboard and used as a monitor, and other touchscreen devices. One person uses their new devices to watch Parkour videos from their XBox. Another plays multi-player Fruit Ninja on a large touch screen monitor.
