Peter gets out of paying a hefty hospital bill by declaring that he's dead, only to get a surprise visit from Death himself. However, Death injures himself while chasing Peter and is unable to do his job, which makes everyone on Earth immortal, so Peter must stand in as the new Grim Reaper.

Tessa believes she has found the perfect costume for Halloween when she channels her inner "suburban girl", However, her fellow students get more of a fright when her costume reminds them of their recently "departed" friend. George tries to help Dallas find the fun in Halloween, but receives a shock of his own when, Dallas's husband Steven (Jay Mohr) returns home from his business trip.

While Earl is busy planning a Halloween party for Dodge and Earl Jr., Randy befriends Catalina's visiting nephew and tries to be a good older brother example to him. When he is caught stealing tips however, Randy tries his best to confront him and tells him to return the money. The boy then appears to go into some sort of trance, which Randy takes to be voodoo. Earl tries to convince Randy that it isn't voodoo, despite seeing voodoo dolls of each other made. After the nephew steals some of Joy's hair, Joy leads the locals in a mob intent on getting their hands on him. Randy and Earl have no choice but to defend the boy from the clutches of the mob. This episode contains a reference to the internet phenomenon Leeroy Jenkins. In the scene where Randy jumps into the crowd to keep them from attacking the boy, he jumps onto the rail of the porch and slurs "Leeroy Jenkins!".

George is tired and needs to take a nap while at work; he finds the perfect place, under his desk. Kramer has taken up swimming, but he finds the pool too constricting for his needs; he begins swimming in the East River. Elaine's date is worried about his back and hers; he sends her a mattress and she gets the wrong idea. She gives the mattress to Kramer. Jerry is getting new kitchen cabinets, but the contractor is constantly asking him questions. George gets Jerry's contractor to make some modifications for his desk, including space for an alarm clock. Steinbrenner is in George's office looking for him to tell him he figured out the lyrics to "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar; he decides to wait for George to return. George gets Jerry to phone in a bomb threat in an effort to get Steinbrenner out of his office. After finding George under the desk, Steinbrenner thinks he has ESP and would be perfect to meet the terrorist's demand of a fitted hat day. Meanwhile, Jerry's contractor, left on his own, has made a change in Jerry's kitchen that no one likes. Elaine gets her mattress back when she gets the right idea; however, Kramer has fouled it up with the stench of the East River. Elaine's boyfriend discovers the benefits of swimming in the East River. Steinbrenner hears a ticking sound in George's office, thinks it's a bomb and calls in the bomb squad. Jerry decides he needs his old kitchen back. Elaine throws her back out trying to get rid of the mattress. Kramer's river gets crowded (both Elaine and her boyfriend are swimming there as well) and George finds a new place to nap in Jerry's cupboards which were rebuilt into their normal condition for $4,000.

In the episode, Homer gets drunk at a party and embarrasses his wife Marge, so she decides to sign them up for a marriage counseling retreat. Homer finds out that the retreat will be held near a lake and packs his fishing equipment, despite Marge telling him that all they will be doing is resolving their differences. At the lake the next morning, Homer tries to sneak away to go fishing, but Marge catches him and he takes a walk instead. On the dock, Homer finds an abandoned fishing pole and a small rowboat. Homer rows out on the lake and catches his fish, but when he notices an upset Marge is looking at him, he immediately lets it go to prove his love for her.
